(TJV NEWS) Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani is closing the gap with former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the race for New York City mayor. A new poll by Emerson College, Pix11, and The Hill — reported by amNY — shows Mamdani gaining serious ground.

The poll, which surveyed 606 likely Democratic voters from May 23 to 26, has Cuomo at 35% and Mamdani at 23% in the first round of ranked-choice voting. But by the 10th round, Cuomo only leads Mamdani 54% to 46%. As amNY reported, that’s a big jump for Mamdani.

Mayor Eric Adams was not included in the poll. He is running as an independent in the general election.

The results show a big shift from earlier in the race. Just a few months ago, Cuomo had a wider lead. But Mamdani’s support is growing fast. As amNY noted, Mamdani also released his own internal poll earlier this week. That poll showed him getting 27% to Cuomo’s 40%.

“Mamdani has surged,” said Spencer Kimball, head of Emerson College Polling. “He’s gaining second-choice votes almost 2-to-1. That’s cutting Cuomo’s lead.”

According to amNY, Cuomo is strongest with Black voters, older voters, and women. Mamdani does best with younger voters, white voters, and people with college degrees.

Both candidates have been running ads. Mamdani’s ads talk about rent freezes, cheaper groceries, free public transit, and childcare. They also call Cuomo corrupt. Cuomo’s ads focus on his experience and call the city “in crisis.”

The Mamdani campaign welcomed the poll results. “Cuomo has hit his ceiling,” the campaign said. “We’re just getting started.” They also said their campaign has knocked on over 600,000 doors with the help of 25,000 volunteers.

Cuomo’s team dismissed the numbers. “This poll is an outlier,” said Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi. He pointed to other polls showing Cuomo with bigger leads. “Cuomo is still the clear frontrunner,” he said. “Voters know he has the experience to lead.”

amNY also reported the standings of other candidates in the race. Comptroller Brad Lander is at 11%. Former Comptroller Scott Stringer has 10%. Council Speaker Adrienne Adams has 8%. Senator Zellnor Myrie has 5%.

In the final rounds of ranked-choice voting, only Mamdani and Cuomo remain.

The poll also asked voters about the general election. If Cuomo runs as the Democrat, he leads with 44%. Republican Curtis Sliwa gets 13%. Eric Adams, running as an independent, gets 10%. Lawyer Jim Walden also runs as an independent and gets 7%. About 26% of voters are undecided.

With just a few weeks until the primary, amNY reports that Mamdani is gaining fast. Whether Cuomo can hold him off is now the big question.

  1. I’d vote for Adams. Cuomo is a complacent sob, but anyone would be better than the one with false promises of lower food prices and rent freezes…not to mention his racism.
