(TJV NEWS) Several people were injured when a car plowed into a crowd of jubilant Liverpool fans during their Premier League victory parade, according to multiple reports from the Daily Mail.
The collision occurred just after 6 p.m. on Water Street in central Liverpool, where thousands had gathered to celebrate the team’s title-winning season. As Daily Mail reports, emergency services responded swiftly, with dramatic scenes showing police cordons, debris scattered across the road, and a heavy presence of officers, ambulances, and fire crews.
Witnesses described the vehicle, a grey people carrier, as “beeping” while forcing its way through the packed street before coming to a halt. A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was detained at the scene by police, Daily Mail confirms. Motive and ideology is not known at this point.

At least four people were seen being carried away on stretchers, while another visibly distressed man leaned heavily on a police officer for support, Daily Mail notes. Authorities confirmed that both Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper have been kept informed as the situation develops.
Harry Rashid, 48, who was at the event with his family, recounted the terrifying moment to Daily Mail, saying: “It happened about 10 feet away from us… This grey people carrier just rammed into all the people at the side of us. It was extremely fast. We just heard the pop, pop, pop of people being knocked off the bonnet.”
Eyewitness Chelsea Yuen also spoke of the chaos. She told Sky News, as quoted by Daily Mail, that she and a friend narrowly avoided being hit. “We were literally like sardines… Then we heard beeping and screaming… a black people carrier driving straight towards us,” she said, adding she saw people chasing the vehicle and pleading with police to act.
In response, Prime Minister Starmer called the scenes “appalling,” offering his thoughts to those affected and thanking emergency responders for their rapid actions. “I’m being kept updated… and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate,” he said, according to Daily Mail.
The incident occurred just hours after Liverpool FC’s open-top bus parade kicked off at 2 p.m., with players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk leading celebrations.
A video circulating online, cited by Daily Mail, shows the moment the car moved through the crowd, prompting panic. Authorities, including Liverpool City Council and North West Ambulance Service, issued statements confirming they were actively managing the incident.
Merseyside Police released a statement saying they were called just after 6 p.m. on Monday, May 26, following reports that a vehicle had collided with pedestrians on Water Street. The car had stopped at the scene, and a man was in custody.
The day, meant to be a celebration of Liverpool’s 20th league title, was overshadowed by the disturbing incident, Daily Mail notes.
