Ari Shpitz: A Story of True Emunah & Bitachon in Hashem

Edited by: Fern Sidman

In the heart of Israel, a story of unparalleled bravery, resilience, and unwavering emunah in Hashem unfolds.  Ari Spitz, an IDF soldier, embodies the spirit of perseverance and devotion, having endured unimaginable physical and emotional challenges. His journey, marked by severe injuries sustained in battle, has inspired many within and beyond the Jewish community.

Ari Spitz was severely injured while fighting Hamas in Gaza. The conflict, known for its intense and perilous nature, took a heavy toll on the soldiers involved. Ari’s injuries were so grave that army doctors initially believed he had no chance of survival. To save his life, doctors had to amputate both of his legs and his right arm. After being unconscious for two months, Ari awoke to a new reality—one that would test his physical limits and spiritual resolve.

Despite the severe physical trauma, Ari’s spirit remained unbroken. Upon regaining consciousness, he told his mother, “If my mind is working, I am going to be okay.” This statement became a testament to his indomitable will and positive outlook on life, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

In the immediate aftermath of his injuries, Ari’s concerns extended beyond his physical recovery. His dedication to Hashem & Torah and the observance of mitzvos (commandments) remained paramount. He sought guidance from a prominent rabbi on how to perform religious duties without his right arm. Specifically, he inquired about the proper way to put on tefillin (phylacteries) and how to say the blessing of netilas yadayim (ritual hand washing).

The rabbi, deeply moved by Ari’s devotion, provided the necessary halachic guidance. Ari’s questions were not merely about adapting to his new physical limitations but were expressions of his unwavering commitment to living a life guided by Torah principles. His inquiry about reciting the Shehechyanu blessing—a prayer said upon experiencing something new—upon receiving his prosthetics brought tears to the rabbi’s eyes. This moment underscored Ari’s deep Hakarat HaTov and Emunah even in the face of profound loss.

Ari’s story is also one of enduring friendship and community support. His study partner from yeshiva, Itai, was also seriously injured in the same incident in Gaza. Miraculously, both Ari and Itai survived their harrowing ordeals. Their bond, forged in the crucible of war and reinforced by their shared emunah and resilience, remained strong.

Last night, Ari’s determination and spirit were on full display as he wheeled his way up to the chuppah (wedding canopy) at Itai’s wedding to recite one of the blessings. This poignant moment was a celebration of life, friendship, and the unwavering spirit of the Jewish people. It was a powerful reminder that, despite the challenges and sacrifices, the nation of Israel endures.

The rabbi who guided Ari in his halachic queries emphasized the need for gratitude and appreciation for the soldiers who sacrifice so much. He called upon the community to be more diligent in their dedication to mitzvos, both in honor of Ari and on behalf of the entire Jewish nation. Ari’s story serves as a powerful inspiration to deepen one’s commitment to faith and community.

Ari stands as a beacon of hope and strength, embodying the enduring spirit of the Jewish people. His life and actions remind us all of the power of faith, the strength of community, and the unbreakable human spirit.
