From Sports Banter to Soapbox Rants: The Left’s Takeover in Sports Media

By: Marvin A. Azrak

The lefty ideologues won’t quit with their soapbox rants, not caring about boundaries. It’s a bummer when they start using innocent people, especially innocent children, as pawns in their political games.

It’s made its way to sports journalism, a brutal site for fans. Sports media used to be all about the games, the banter, and strictly news with intriguing debates. Now, it’s like they’ve joined forces with the progressive left and created this monster that’s more interested in devouring anyone who’s “out of bounds” instead of covering what’s happening on the field, court, or rink.

Take this Deadspin story about a 9-year-old Chiefs fan. The Poor kid was slammed for wearing face paint and a headdress. Turns out, he’s Native American, and they conveniently left that detail out. What happened to give people the benefit of the doubt?

Remember the days when there were jokes on SportsCenter? Now, it’s all wannabe politicos, lefty ideologues, and influencers who think they’re better than avid fans.

It’s people like Carron Phillips, who claims to be a sports journalist but seems more interested in finding or making up social issues. It’s a shame – they’ve lost touch with what made sports enjoyable in the first place, and it feels like they care more about pushing their agendas than respecting their fans. They’ve faced backlash just like when athletes do so.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, as this high-profile athlete-activist, used his social media game to tackle political issues. It’s fantastic that he’s reaching a broader audience, but it also feels like sports is becoming less about the game and more about activism. LeBron’s not the first to speak out, but he took it to a new level a few years ago. Fox News even told him in 2019 to “shut up and dribble”!

For the next few years, LeBron’s activism is turning sports into a political battleground. It’s not just about the game; it’s about what athletes say off the field.

There’s a reason why Stephen Curry recently passed  James as the most-viewed NBA player, according to a report by the boardroom. Last year, James said he’s stepping away from getting involved in politics. That’s the right move. He’s sticking to his sport. The journalists around the games should do the same.
