(NEWSMAX) A New York sheriff on Friday pleaded for more help from the U.S. Border Patrol, telling reporters his department is seeing “more and more people” attempting to cross the Canadian border, which he noted “can be deadly terrain if you’re not familiar with it.”

Just last week, David Favro’s team in Clinton County assisted Border Patrol agents in rescuing 39 migrants, including some whose clothes had frozen to their bodies.

“The only way to really be able to cover and protect [the northern border] is boots on the ground,” Favro said, per NBC News.

Customs and Border Protection added 25 agents to the area last week as illegal border crossings have increased tenfold in the last five months compared to the same time last year along the nation’s border spanning eastern New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

Just 2,000 agents cover the 5,000-mile border with Canada, according to NBC.

Nearly 2,000 migrants attempted to cross the U.S.-Canada border in the region from October 2022 to February 2023. Just 200 migrants attempted to make the crossing over the same time last year.

Most of them were Mexicans.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, a Republican, on Tuesday asked Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to step up enforcement along his state’s 51-mile border with Canada.

“Over the last few months, the state of New Hampshire has attempted to assist the federal government in securing our northern border. These offers of assistance have been repeatedly rejected. The Biden administration has cut funding and hindered the state’s ability to assist in patrolling the northern border,” Sununu said.
