Fashion Week Brooklyn is exploring the intersection of fashion and technology. The theme for 2022 Season 2 is Metaverse of Fashion, and the virtual world is allowing people to interact with each other in a more immersive environment. Aspiring and established designers showcase their collections to buyers, media, and other industry professionals worldwide. With a proud history of art, entrepreneurship, and innovation, Brooklyn is the perfect place to amplify the work of fashion-related businesses and creatives in a collaborative setting.
Fashion Week Brooklyn is a one-of-a-kind fashion event that happens bi-annually and is powered by the nonprofit BKStyle Foundation. The organization provides a professional forum for fashion creatives to generate buzz and connect to drive the industry forward. They lead the charge in bringing fashion into the future through fashion week events. Fashion Week Brooklyn emerged in 2006 and is made possible by community initiatives, partnerships, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts.
Attendees explore the collections and experience shows in a completely new way as the fashion industry constantly evolves. Fashion Week Brooklyn also features presentations on cutting-edge trends. This season a panel discussion called Deconstructing the Fashion Metaverse highlighted the latest in fashion design and technology. Additionally, the BK Style Web3 community initiative’s pinnacle coincided with the week-long fashion event. The program provides a learning platform for emerging fashion designers to access digital creation tools. Company Enwoven partnered with BK Style Foundation and 3D software sponsored by CLO to give the designers involved an opportunity to showcase their final presentations during Fashion Week Brooklyn. Their creations were minted into NFTs and auctioned off.
The five participating designers had access to CLO 3D, an Enwoven subscription. They received education mentor sessions with pioneers in Web3 and NFTs and exposure to fashion, retail, and beauty spaces leaders. Designers include Victor Pearlman, Leilani Bell, Travis Dizon, Jose Salazar, and Brandon Wallace. CLO is a 3D fashion design software program creating virtual, true-to-life garment visualization with cutting-edge simulation technologies for the fashion industry. Enwoven is a secure, cloud-based platform to aggregate and contextualize creative assets to present a single source of brand truth for fashion, luxury, and retail brands. Enwoven’s Creative Lifecycle Management(™) tracks, preserves, and manages product creation workflows from concept to consumer in the physical and digital space.
Celebrities, including actor Sir Patrick Stewart and music artist General Steele, helped kick things off at the Fashion Block Party. With runway shows, presentations, and after-parties curated for Metaverse of Fashion, the borough is buzzing with stylish and innovative scheduled events. Brooklyn’s unique culture has always been a source of inspiration for creatives, and Fashion Week Brooklyn (FWBK) has become a mainstay. The festivities complement New York Fashion Week in September, which hosted several events in Brooklyn, including the Tommy Hilfiger runway show and the Heaven by Marc Jacobs party.
Forming partnerships and forging meaningful community alliances is crucial to the event’s success. Fashion Week Brooklyn takes things to the next level by incorporating the metaverse into its possibility. Young designers have represented a mixture of ready-to-wear and Avant guard lines, plus sustainable and vintage collections. Several categories debuted at the Acumen Capital Partners building with the Brooklyn Arts Council, the IW Group, and 3DUniverse hosted by COPE NYC. The Next-Up Designer Collections showcased Maceoberg, Illy, Living Life Apparel, Pas De Bell, and Jose Salazar. The Sustainable and Vintage fashions lineup in partnership with Made in NYC included Moshood Creation, Born Again Vintage, Konjo International Baqash Wilson, Rosie~Mae, IndigoStyle Vintage / Brownstone Couture, and Stevie Boi.
The Meta Runway showcase spanned two days. Friday featured a variety of labels: A Disco World, I am Forever Fabulous, Ecookla, Cide Clothing, SanGiulioModa, ParadoxVestedRelics. Saturday show participants included Cult Luxury, Yali NYC, Little Brown Village, Elin Wilder, Glamour Saves the World by Roberto De Villacis and Zam Barrett Zfactorie. The Sunday finale, dubbed Slayway, and a debut of collections by LGBTQ designers followed by a fundraiser at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Designer lines, including Curated by Emolsa, St. Michelg, Cooper, Shubba, and Tashii Couture, participated in the showcase.
The concept of fashion week, or seasonal collection debuts, can be traced back to fashion designer Charles Frederick Worth. The idea of fashion week began in Paris when marketers used to hire women to wear couture items in public places, from race tracks to beauty salons. These notorious exhibitions gradually became social events of their own. In France, runway shows are still called “défilés de mode,” which, when translated, literally means fashion parades.” A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, where fashion designers, brands or “houses” display their latest collections in runway shows and presentations to buyers and the media.
There’s a new fashion capital on the rise, the metaverse. Fashion designers increasingly turn to the virtual world to inspire and showcase their collections. Brooklyn is at the forefront of this trend, with several fashion shows and events taking place in the metaverse. This is a new and exciting way to experience fashion, with designers able to push the boundaries of what is possible. The metaverse offers endless possibilities for creativity, and we can’t wait to see what fashion looks like in this new world. The fashion industry is always looking for the next big thing, and it seems that the metaverse may be it. A Brooklyn-based fashion designer was one of the first to bring fashion to the metaverse. His label debuted its first collection in the virtual world. He has continued to explore the possibilities of fashion in the metaverse, as are many others. This trend is clearly seen with many others recently debuting their latest collections at this year’s Metaverse Fashion Week.
