One person was killed and four others were injured when gunfire erupted during a shooting on the iconic Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn just before midnight on Saturday.
NYPD officials said a 42-year-old man was shot in the back after gunfire rang out at West 29th near the western end of the famed Riegelmann Boardwalk, according to the Post report. He was later pronounced dead.
Law enforcement sources have said that the other victims hospitalized included a 49-year-old woman shot in the leg, a 34-year-old woman shot in the foot, a 46-year-old man shot in the leg and an unidentified man also shot in the leg. The four injured people are expected to recover and were being treated at NY Langone Hospital in stable condition, according to officials.
The ages of those injured range from 34 to 49 years old. It was unclear what led to the 11:57 p.m. shooting and no arrests had been made, sources have said.
Speaking to WABC News in New York, bystanders on the boardwalk said that they heard several shots. “It was like about I don’t know, I heard about seven shots, one after the other,” one witness said. “It was very quick. I was like, someone is having a celebration of some sorts probably. I didn’t see any fireworks though. So, I was like, it might be gunfire, but I wish it was the fireworks.”
Ana Rojas, a nearby resident, told News 12 she was in a deep sleep when she heard the shots ring out.
“I didn’t get up because I was scared, but I heard from the window screaming, and then the shots…then the police and everybody came,” she said.
There are still so many questions about what led up to the shooting. Were the victims the intended targets or were they shot at random?
Police say no arrests have been made yet as the investigation continues.
