Mayor Eric Adams’ groundbreaking “Breaking Bread, Building Bonds” initiative continued its successful run today, bringing together a diverse cross-section of Staten Island residents at Curtis High School for an evening of shared meals, meaningful dialogue, and strengthened community ties. The event, attended by representatives from the NYPD, local clergy, and prominent community leaders, exemplified the mayor’s vision for a more unified and understanding New York City.

The atmosphere at Curtis High School was vibrant and welcoming as attendees, many of whom had never met before, gathered around tables to share a meal and engage in candid conversations. The program’s core mission – to break down societal silos and foster empathy – was on full display as individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, and professions connected on a personal level.

“Tonight’s ‘Breaking Bread, Building Bonds’ event on Staten Island truly showcased the power of coming together,” said Mendy Mirocznik, President of the Council of Jewish Organizations (COJO) of Staten Island. “When New Yorkers from all walks of life sit down, share a meal, and open their hearts and minds, we build bridges, not walls. The energy and genuine connections I witnessed here at Curtis High School are a testament to our city’s resilience and our collective desire for unity.”

The presence of NYPD officers, alongside revered clergy members and influential community leaders, underscored the collaborative spirit of the initiative. These vital community pillars engaged directly with residents, fostering trust and highlighting the shared commitment to public safety and well-being. Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to interact with diverse individuals and gain new perspectives, leading to a palpable sense of renewed community spirit.

“It was truly inspiring to see so many different faces come together tonight,” said Inspector Eric Waldhelm, Commanding Officer, Pct. 120. “These conversations are essential for building stronger relationships between law enforcement and the communities we serve. ‘Breaking Bread, Building Bonds’ creates a space for true understanding.”

Chaplain Victor Brown, NYPD, remarked. “Our faith traditions teach us the importance of fellowship and compassion. This initiative embodies those values, bringing light and understanding into our neighborhoods.”

The “Breaking Bread, Building Bonds” initiative is a citywide effort to organize thousands of meals and conversations, aiming to cultivate diversity, identify common bonds, share traditions, and actively combat bias, hate, and discrimination. Today’s event at Curtis High School is another powerful example of how simple acts of shared humanity can lead to profound positive change across New York City, quipped Vanessa Limani, Staten Island Borough Director, Community Affairs Unit, New York City Office of the Mayor.
