On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the Staten Island Council of Jewish Organizations (COJO), in collaboration with the Aur Torah Sephardic Minyan, officially launched its 2025 Summer Food Pantry Program. The launch took place at Aur Torah, located in the New Springville section of Staten Island, and marks a critical seasonal effort to combat food insecurity across the borough during the summer months.
COJO President Mendy Mirocznik extended heartfelt thanks to Rabbi Aharon Zeev, Congregational President Oshri Reuven, and the members of Aur Torah for embracing and supporting this vital initiative. He also praised the leadership of Iva Reuven, COJO’s Food Pantry Director, and her dedicated team for their tireless efforts in organizing and executing the program.
“This initiative is a true example of what can be achieved when a community comes together,” said Mirocznik. “Thanks to our many supporters and partners, we are able to provide meaningful relief to families facing financial strain during the summer.”
COJO also acknowledged the steadfast support of the New York Police Department (NYPD). Captain Daniel Tovar, Executive Officer of the 121st Precinct, along with Community Affairs Officers Scott Gusenfitter, Sean Mondello, and John Sibal, were commended for their hands-on assistance—ranging from traffic coordination to helping pack and distribute food packages. Mirocznik noted that this cooperation with law enforcement strengthens community trust and fosters stronger relationships between the NYPD and local residents.
Highlighting the growing challenge of rising food prices, especially for seniors and families with children, Iva Reuven thanked Aur Torah for its hospitality and partnership. She also expressed deep appreciation to food distribution allies including Food Bank for New York City, City Harvest, and Met Council. Special recognition was given to David Greenfield (CEO, Met Council), Aaron Cyperstein (Managing Director of Legal and External Affairs), Benjamin Zaintez (Agency Relations Manager), and Hannah Lupien (Managing Director of Food Programs), whose generosity and leadership were instrumental in the pantry’s success.
Reuven further acknowledged the support of healthcare and insurance partners, including Gary Tai and Carina Vizhnay of Anthem BlueCross BlueShield, and Jenny Palaguachi, 1199SEIU Healthcare and Education Project Coordinator, for their active involvement in the pantry launch.
Captain Tovar reflected on the importance of such partnerships, noting, “Working closely with COJO, Rabbi Zeev, Mendy Mirocznik, and Iva Reuven is an honor. These events not only meet immediate needs but foster relationships, encourage dialogue, and strengthen public safety.”
Rabbi Aharon Zeev praised the work of Iva Reuven, describing her as an inspiration to the community, and commended COJO’s leadership for initiating such a transformative effort. “Aur Torah remains committed to being a beacon of compassion and community support,” said Rabbi Zeev. “We are proud to partner with COJO and the NYPD in addressing hunger and promoting dignity for all.”
As the summer unfolds, COJO and its network of partners remain committed to expanding their efforts to ensure no Staten Islander faces hunger alone.
