(JEWISH VOICE NEWS) Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced Friday that she will resign from Congress on Jan. 5, citing a bitter falling out with former President Donald Trump over the Jeffrey Epstein files and other issues, CNBC reported.

Greene, 51, who represents Georgia’s 14th District and is serving her third term, posted a video and statement on X explaining her decision, saying Trump’s recent attacks — including labeling her a “traitor” and a “lunatic” — made it impossible to continue effectively. “Loyalty should be a two-way street and we should be able to vote our conscience and represent our district’s interest because our job title is literally, ‘Representative,’” Greene wrote.

Following the announcement, Trump told ABC News, “I think it’s great news for the country. It’s great.”

Greene had long been a leading MAGA supporter and a prominent figure in Trump’s movement, often sparking controversy for extreme rhetoric and promoting conspiracy theories. However, in recent weeks, she drew Trump’s ire for backing legislation compelling the Department of Justice to release investigative files on Epstein and for criticizing him for focusing on foreign leaders over domestic priorities, CNBC reported.

Trump publicly withdrew his support for Greene last week, indicating he would back “the right person” if someone challenged her in next year’s Republican primary.

In her statement, Greene stressed her personal reasons for stepping down: “I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms.” She added that she refused to be “a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”

Greene highlighted her loyalty to Trump and the Republican Party, noting she had “fought harder than almost any other elected Republican to elect Donald Trump and Republicans to power” and had even left her mother’s side to vote against Trump’s second impeachment in 2021. She said she broke with Trump and the party only on a few issues, including opposition to H1B visas, U.S. involvement in foreign wars, and demanding the release of the Epstein files.

“Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States of America, whom I fought for,” Greene wrote.

CNBC noted that Greene’s resignation could pave the way for her to potentially challenge Trump in a future presidential bid or assume a larger role in the MAGA movement, though her statement acknowledged that leaving Congress might also end her influence in the movement.

Greene’s departure will slightly reduce the Republican majority in the House, though the 14th District is solidly conservative, making it likely that a Republican will succeed her in a special election, CNBC reported.
