(TJV NEWS) Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., said Tuesday that the Department of Justice appears to have illegally withheld FBI interviews with a survivor of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein who also accused President Donald Trump of serious misconduct, according to CNBC.

Garcia’s statement follows reports that FBI interviews with the accuser were not accessible in the Justice Department’s public database of millions of documents related to Epstein. The records were released after Congress passed a federal law requiring disclosure of files tied to the case.

“For the last few weeks, Oversight Democrats have been investigating the FBI’s handling of allegations from 2019 of sexual assault on a minor made against President Donald Trump by a survivor,” Garcia said in a statement, as reported by CNBC.

Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said he reviewed unredacted evidence logs at the Justice Department on Monday.

“Oversight Democrats can confirm that the DOJ appears to have illegally withheld FBI interviews with this survivor who accused President Trump of heinous crimes,” Garcia said. He added that Democrats on the committee plan to open a parallel investigation into the matter.

Garcia also cited a prior subpoena issued by the Oversight Committee and the recently enacted Epstein Files Transparency Act, saying the records in question “must immediately be shared with Congress and the American public.”

He further alleged that withholding the material could amount to a cover-up, stating that concealing potential evidence involving the president would constitute a serious offense.

CNBC reported that it has requested comment from both the Department of Justice and the White House regarding Garcia’s claims.

President Trump has not been criminally charged in connection with any allegations brought by an Epstein survivor. He has denied wrongdoing.

Trump and Epstein were previously acquaintances but had a falling out in the early 2000s.

Last week, the president said that the release of the Epstein-related files had “totally exonerated” him.

Trump made the remark when asked about the arrest of Prince Andrew, Duke of York in the United Kingdom. British authorities reportedly detained the royal on suspicion of misconduct in public office, in a case believed to involve allegations that he shared confidential trade information with Epstein.

“I’m the expert in a way because I’ve been totally exonerated. That’s very nice. I can actually speak about it very nicely,” Trump said in response to a reporter’s question about the arrest.

“I think it’s a shame. I did nothing,” the president added.

The Justice Department has not publicly addressed Garcia’s allegations as of Tuesday, CNBC reported.
