Operation ‘Stop Scam” Calls: US Regulators Unite to Combat Robocall Epidemic

In an effort to combat the incessant and often fraudulent robocalls plaguing Americans, US regulators have launched Operation Stop Scam Calls, according to a recently published report in the New York Post. This nationwide crackdown involves collaboration between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 101 federal and state law enforcement authorities, including all 50 states’ attorneys general and Washington, DC. The Post also reported that the initiative comprises over 180 enforcement actions and initiatives aimed at targeting not only telemarketers but also Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers and lead generators responsible for tricking consumers into providing personal information. The mission is clear: to protect consumers from unwanted and illegal robocalls that have become an increasing nuisance and a threat to personal privacy, the report said.
Robocalls have become a relentless intrusion into the lives of millions of Americans. The Post reported that every day, countless individuals receive unsolicited and often deceptive calls that attempt to sell products, services, or, worse, defraud them. These robocalls often originate from outside the country, making them even more challenging to trace and stop. Authorities seek to dismantle these nefarious operations that prey on unsuspecting victims.
Surprisingly, many of the victims targeted by robocalls are registered on the National Do-Not-Call Registry, a creation of the FTC back in 2003, the Post report indicated. This registry serves as a protective measure, allowing consumers to opt-out of receiving unsolicited telemarketing calls. However, despite its existence, robocallers have continued to exploit loopholes and tactics to reach registered individuals, highlighting the urgent need for Operation Stop Scam Calls, the Post reported.
One of the most significant developments in Operation Stop Scam Calls involves New York-based company Fluent, which recently reached a settlement with authorities. The Post report said that Fluent agreed to a $2.5 million civil fine and a robocall ban after being charged with operating as a “consent farm.” The company allegedly tricked nearly one million people daily into receiving pitches for various products and services, the report said. While Fluent did not admit to any wrongdoing, its case serves as a warning to other entities involved in similar activities.
Additionally, three other defendant companies have agreed to pay $15.7 million in penalties. However, some of these fines will not be paid as the companies cannot afford them. Nevertheless, these penalties underscore the regulators’ seriousness in holding wrongdoers accountable for their actions.
While the battle against these unscrupulous operators may not be won overnight, this comprehensive crackdown signals the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding citizens from unwanted and fraudulent communications.
