(AP) – The U.S. House of Representatives rejected a resolution that sought to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to wage war against Iran without congressional approval.
Lawmakers voted 219–212 to block the measure. Most Republicans opposed it, joined by four Democrats. Meanwhile, 210 Democrats and two Republicans supported the resolution.
The effort was led by Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, and Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California. They invoked the War Powers Resolution, which is intended to limit a president’s ability to commit U.S. forces to hostilities without authorization from Congress.
The vote effectively leaves intact the authority of Donald Trump to continue the current military campaign involving Iran.
The House action came one day after the United States Senate blocked a similar attempt to restrict the president’s war powers tied to the Iran operation.
Democrats have largely opposed the escalation with Iran, arguing that the president launched the military action without approval from Congress and warning it could carry long-term security risks for the United States.
Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, tried to unify Democrats behind the resolution but was unable to convince several pro-Israel members of his caucus to support the measure. He met with a number of those lawmakers earlier in the week urging them to back the effort, but several ultimately declined to follow party leadership.
