(TJV NEWS) U.S. Vice President JD Vance issued a blistering rebuke after Israel’s parliament gave initial approval to a controversial bill extending Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria, legislation viewed as tantamount to annexation of Palestinian territory.

The preliminary vote, which passed 25–24 in the Knesset, took place while Vance was in Israel, a timing he called “weird,” “stupid,” and “an insult,” according to Reuters and The Times of Israel. The measure still faces further debate in the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

“I thought it was a stupid political stunt,” Vance told reporters, fuming that Israeli lawmakers had chosen to stage the vote while he was still in the country. “We certainly weren’t happy about it,” he added, stressing that “the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel.”

Vance, who met with Israeli officials during his visit to discuss the Gaza ceasefire plan and the U.S.-led coordination center overseeing Gaza’s transition away from Hamas, said the Knesset’s move undermined the spirit of cooperation between Washington and Jerusalem.

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has distanced himself from the bill—driven largely by hardline settler-linked lawmakers—Vance’s reaction underscored the deep unease within the Trump administration and the broader Republican movement.

As Reuters and AP reported, Vance emphasized that U.S. policy firmly opposes annexation, hinting that the incident could sour future relations if Israel’s right-wing pushes ahead. The vice president—considered the most likely heir to Trump’s political legacy—is said to have taken the episode as both provocative and disrespectful, marking a rare moment of open frustration between Washington and one of its closest allies
