President Trump revealed that New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani has formally reached out to request a meeting at the White House, and that plans for such an encounter are currently being coordinated. The announcement marks a potential thaw in relations between the Trump administration and the recently elected New York mayor, whose policies and rhetoric have generated significant controversy across political and community lines.

According to a report on Sunday at Israel National News, Trump made the comments while speaking to reporters outside his Mar-a-Lago estate.

“The mayor of New York wants to meet with us and we’ll work something out,” Trump said. “We want everything to work out well for New York.”

The White House later confirmed to Israel National News that a formal request had indeed been received from Mamdani’s office, though no specific date has been set for the meeting. Officials said preliminary discussions are underway between senior aides to coordinate the logistics and agenda for what would be Mamdani’s first visit to the White House since assuming office earlier this month.

As Israel National News reported, a White House spokesperson issued a brief statement Monday evening, acknowledging the mayor’s outreach. “We can confirm that Mayor Mamdani’s office has contacted the administration to request a meeting with the President,” the statement read. “Scheduling discussions are ongoing, but no date has been finalized at this time.”

Sources familiar with the matter told Israel National News that the meeting would likely focus on issues related to urban infrastructure, federal aid for housing, and economic revitalization initiatives in New York City. However, given Mamdani’s strong political positions and the sharp ideological differences between the two leaders, the conversation may also touch on topics of foreign policy and community relations — including the mayor’s stance toward Israel, which has sparked widespread criticism both domestically and abroad.

The prospective meeting follows weeks of national attention surrounding Mamdani’s election victory and his policy agenda, which has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers, Jewish leaders, and political analysts alike. As Israel National News has previously reported, Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has taken positions highly critical of Israel’s government and has been accused by several Jewish organizations of normalizing antisemitic rhetoric during his campaign.

Trump’s remarks appeared conciliatory in tone, suggesting an effort to maintain dialogue with city leadership despite political differences. The president’s statement that he wanted “everything to work out well for New York” was interpreted by some as a gesture of goodwill toward the city he once called home — even as tensions between his supporters and the new administration remain high.

Within hours of Trump’s announcement, senior officials in New York City Hall confirmed to Israel National News that the mayor’s outreach was intended as a “constructive overture.” According to aides, Mamdani believes cooperation with Washington is essential to addressing the city’s fiscal challenges and ensuring continued federal support for housing, education, and public safety.

As the Israel National News report noted, the meeting — if finalized — would come at a pivotal moment for New York City, which is facing complex economic and social issues including rising housing costs, infrastructure needs, and public security concerns. Trump, who has long touted his record on law enforcement and economic development during his first term, has indicated that he views strong city–federal collaboration as essential for urban recovery.

“President Trump believes in supporting America’s cities and ensuring that all Americans, regardless of political background, have access to safety and prosperity,” one senior administration official told Israel National News. “The discussions with Mayor Mamdani will be approached with that same spirit.”

While no formal agenda has been released, political observers expect that the meeting will also address federal–state coordination on law enforcement and homeland security measures, particularly amid ongoing debates about New York City’s policies on policing, immigration, and antisemitic hate crimes.

Both sides are said to be in “active communication” regarding potential dates and security arrangements. The White House has not indicated whether the meeting would include other city or state officials, nor whether a press conference will follow.

According to the Israel National News report, the administration aims to finalize scheduling details within the coming weeks, pending the President’s travel commitments and the mayor’s availability. Should the meeting proceed, it would mark the first direct engagement between Trump and Mamdani — two figures whose sharply contrasting visions for governance reflect the broader ideological divisions shaping American political discourse today.

For now, the president’s statement appears to have set the stage for a potentially significant dialogue between the federal government and America’s largest city. As Trump put it during his remarks outside Mar-a-Lago, “We’ll work something out — because we want to see New York succeed.”
