Rachel Zabar, whose family owns the famed Zabar specialty food market in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, has sold her Manhattan apartment.
As reported by the NY Post, she sold her condo at 19 Bond St. in Noho for $3.15 million. She said she had not lived in the loft since 2006, which is when she moved to Los Angeles, CA. “I renovated it, and then rented it out. It was time to sell,” Zabar told Gimme Shelter. The identity of the home buyer is Sharone Ben-Harosh, the founder of FlatRate Moving. The loft had first been listed in June for $3.39 million, lowering its asking price three months later to $3.19 million. Zabar had purchased the home in 2001 for $920,000, as per property records.
It is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom home spanning 1,367 square feet. The home features 12-foot ceilings, oversized windows, exposed brick and original columns, a wall of built-in closets, a wood burning fireplace, a modern open kitchen, a dining nook which can be used as a home office, and sliding glass doors that open to a Juliet balcony overlooking Lafayette and Bond streets. The home is on the 4th floor of a 5-story, 10-unit corner building on the cobblestoned street. The seller’s broker was Ian Slater of Compass, while the buyer was represented by broker Tamir Shemesh of Serhant.
Rachel is a scion of the gourmet food emporium at the Zabar’s on 2245 Broadway and 80th Street, which was founded in 1934. She once told the NY Times that she had worked at the iconic grocery store’s bread, coffee and caviar departments as a teenager. Since then, however, she has moved on to forge her own path as a high-end vintage couture dealer. “I was always interested in vintage, from the time I was around 9 years old,” Zabar said. “My dad and I would always go to the flea market at Amsterdam and 77th Street. It was the era of the John Hughes movies, with the overcoats, and that kind of vintage look. I was always looking for vintage pieces and it just never ended — and I eventually turned it into a business.” She opened her namesake store in Los Angeles– Rachel Zabar Vintage. She is a 1st dibs online vintage dealer and sells couture to red carpet clients including Tracee Ellis Ross and Rihanna. Zabar also sells to private collectors, institutions like Tokyo’s Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum, and fashion house archivists at top designer brands.
Rachel said she still visits NYC frequently to see friends and family, including her 94-year-old father Saul– whose parents Louis and Lillian had founded the bagels and smoked fish gourmet market. As per the Post, she said that if she ever does buy another second home in the Big Apple, she will opt for the same downtown neighborhood, which she said is still her favorite
