A recent poll conducted by Siena College sheds light on the political landscape in New York, indicating that President Joe Biden holds a comfortable lead over former President Donald Trump by 12 points. The poll, released on Tuesday by Siena College, presents intriguing insights into voter sentiments in one of America’s most politically significant states, as was reported on TheHill.com web site.
According to the survey, approximately 48 percent of New York voters expressed their support for President Biden, while 36 percent indicated backing for former President Trump. Notably, 16 percent of voters remain undecided, underscoring the fluidity of the political landscape even in a traditionally blue state like New York.
The poll also indicated that amongst those who identify as Jewish and reside in New York, 44% of them plan to cast their vote for Biden in the upcoming November presidential race and a surprising 53% are planning to pull the lever for Trump. Generally speaking, Jews have traditionally voted for Democratic candidates since the days of FDR.
However, Biden’s lead narrows slightly when considering a four-way race that includes independent candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West. TheHill.com reported that in such a scenario, Biden’s lead over Trump shrinks to 10 points, indicating a more competitive environment with additional candidates in the mix.
The findings of the poll reveal a significant shift from previous election cycles. While Biden maintains a double-digit lead over Trump, the margin is notably smaller compared to his 23-point victory over Trump in the 2020 presidential election, as was noted in TheHill.com report. Similarly, Hillary Clinton secured an identical win margin over Trump in 2016, highlighting the evolving dynamics of New York’s political landscape.
Pollster Steven Greenberg of Siena College emphasized the overwhelmingly Democratic nature of New York, noting the substantial enrollment advantage Democrats hold over Republicans, as was mentioned in the report on TheHill.com web site. Moreover, the state’s historical allegiance to Democratic presidential candidates is evident, with no Republican nominee carrying the state since Ronald Reagan’s landslide victory in 1984.
Despite Biden’s lead, the poll underscores a lack of enthusiasm for both major party candidates among New Yorkers. A slim plurality of voters, including a significant majority of independents, expressed a preference for alternative candidates over Biden or Trump. TheHill.com also reported that among Republicans, 61 percent back Trump, while 29 percent seek an alternative. Similarly, within the Democratic Party, 46 percent support Biden, while 38 percent express a desire for another choice.
The implications of these findings extend beyond the presidential race, particularly concerning the 2024 House race in New York. Democrats are targeting several GOP-held seats in districts that Biden carried in the 2020 election, the report on thehill.com web site said. The recent victory in the district formerly held by Rep. George Santos underscores Democrats’ momentum in these battleground districts.
The Siena poll, conducted among 806 registered New York voters from February 12 to 14, comes with a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points. While providing valuable insights into current voter sentiments, the poll serves as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of politics and the unpredictable dynamics that shape electoral outcomes. As the 2024 election approaches, both parties will undoubtedly intensify their efforts.
