After a horrific weekend of subway violence, which included a slasher who brutally attacked 4 people, killing 2, there has been an outcry for more police officers in the MTA system, and the NYPD has come up with a plan, to add 644 more cops into the underground world of the NYC subways.

The MTA wanted 1,000 additional NYPD cops to patrol the transit system following the maniacal A-train slashings.

Four homeless people were stabbed, two fatally, over a 14-hour period beginning Friday morning. Police on Sunday arrested Rigoberto Lopez, 21, on charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with the attacks, NY 1 summarized

In response to the stabbings, the NYPD announced they were adding 500 cops into the subway’s, but the MTA believed they needed more.

In a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, MTA Chairman and CEO Pat Foye and interim New York City Transit president Sarah Feinberg said there needs to be a larger police presence in the system and “a much greater focus on mental health care services and interventions”, NY1 reported.

The NY Post reported: The NYPD deployed 644 new officers into the city’s subway system Tuesday — up 144 from the 500 initially announced — amid an outcry about recent violent crime on the rails, officials announced.

While Shea has insisted crime is under control of NY, the amount random attacks have been skyrocketing in the labyrinth of the subways. In a statement, a spokesperson for de Blasio only referenced the 500 cops the NYPD has deployed to patrol the subway.

Initially the commissioner only agreed to adding 500 cops before being on the extra 144. “What we committed to — and thought it was important to put the public at ease — we announced the 500 officers on Saturday,” Shea said in a PIX 11 interview. “We think that’s the appropriate number right now. Of course, we will continue to evaluate as we move forward. It’s that balance…. The city is not the subway system. It’s the entire city and the resources and the crime picture, we could throw resources at a problem and put whatever the number of officers into the system is,” the commissioner said. “There are other issues at play that need to be fixed. We cannot arrest someone over and over and over again. It doesn’t make sense. That’s where we need the help.”

Shea appears to be alluding to the revolving door criminal justice system in NYC. Before the pandemic, the city was mocked for the de Blasio program of rewarding arrested citizens with Met’s tickets, while Cuomo’s bail reform has led to repeat offenders committing acts of depravity upon the public. It took 2 slashed up victims, left bleeding to death, all alone on an empty subway car to get the city to finally wake up to the serious issues NYC faces.
