As New York City continues to struggle to shoulder the mammoth financial costs involved in housing, feeding, educating and providing health care to the massive influx of illegal immigrants who have come to the Big Apple, it now appears that some help is on the way.

On Monday, the New York Post reported that state lawmakers have agreed to shell out $1 billion to New York City to cover its tidal wave of migrants. The costs involved with the support of migrants are already projected  to surpass $4.3 billion by mid-2024.

“Governor Kathy Hochul proposing a billion dollars and the Legislature accepting a billion dollars for the migrant crisis is an acknowledgment that we have to do something,” Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) said Monday at the Capitol, the Post reported. “But in essence, this isn’t something that the city or the state should really be paying for,” he added. “We’re going to continue to ask our federal government to handle this.”

Sources told the Post that State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) has also already signed off on the migrant funding as Albany Democrats push for a new state budget 24 days past the April 1 deadline. The billion-dollar expenditure appears to be roughly in line with what Hochul included in her draft spending plan that she unveiled on February 1st, the paper reported.

That proposal included $767 million to house migrants, along with $162 million for related National Guard operations, $137 million for health care, $30 million for resettlement funding, $10 million for legal services and $6 million to support a shelter at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, according to the Post.

Mayor Eric Adams, said that the city he governs “is being destroyed” by the migrant problem as he traveled to Washington to beseech the Biden administration for financial relief, according to a report on Friday in the New York Post. Earlier last week, Adams excoriated the Biden administration for abandoning the city at its greatest time of need.

During his visit to the nation’s capitol on Friday, Adams planned to apply pressure to the administration for further financial assistance as he said that there is a multibillion-dollar price tag that the Big Apple is on the hook for as it pertains to the migrant crisis.

The Post reported that during a panel discussion hosted by the African American Mayors Association on Friday, Adams, who appeared quite distressed said,   “The city is being destroyed by the migrant crisis,” before his scheduled meeting at the White House.

Breitbart.com reported that Adams was joined on the panel by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D), Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D), and outgoing Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D).

“The national government has turned its back on New York City,” Adams said, as was reported by Breitbart.com. “Every service in this city is going to be impacted by the asylum seeker crisis.”

New York City has spent $817 million to address the migrant crisis between July 2022 and March, according to the Office of Budget and Management. Breitbart also reported that estimates show the city will spend $4.2 billion on costs related to the migrant crisis from June 2023 through the end of fiscal year 2024. New York City officials have applied for a $654 million grant from FEMA, and a decision is expected on May 31, Breitbart.com reported.

Adams also met with White House officials and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell on Friday to discuss the migrant crisis.
