A Ramadan dinner hosted by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion has ignited a storm of controversy after it emerged that one of the guests was Mahmoud Khalil, a controversial Columbia University activist who has drawn national attention for his role in organizing and fomenting pro-Hamas demonstrations. The gathering, which took place during the Muslim holy month, has raised questions about political judgment and public messaging at a moment when tensions in the city are already running high following an alleged ISIS-inspired terror plot uncovered on Sunday.
According to a report on Monday at VIN News, Khalil—a Syrian-born Palestinian agitator who became a prominent figure during campus protests linked to the Israel-Hamas war—attended the meal alongside members of his family. The event, hosted at the mayor’s official residence on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, was part of a series of Ramadan observances organized by City Hall to mark the holy month for Muslim residents of New York.
Yet the presence of Khalil at the gathering has quickly transformed what might otherwise have been a routine cultural observance into a highly charged political flashpoint.
As VIN News reported, Khalil rose to prominence during demonstrations associated with protests at Columbia University that drew national scrutiny for rhetoric sympathetic to Hamas, the Iranian-backed terror organization responsible for the October 7 attacks in Israel. Those protests, which unfolded amid widespread campus unrest across the United States, often included slogans and imagery that crossed the line from political expression into explicit support for a group designated by the United States government as a terrorist organization.
Khalil’s activism placed him at the center of a national immigration controversy as well. Federal authorities sought to deport him after raising concerns about the accuracy of information he allegedly provided while applying for permanent residency in the United States.
According to details cited in the VIN News report, the Department of Homeland Security argued that Khalil’s immigration filings contained misleading or incomplete information, prompting officials to initiate deportation proceedings. During that process, Khalil was detained for a period by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while the case underwent review.
Although Khalil was eventually released pending further legal proceedings, the episode cemented his reputation as a polarizing figure whose activism has attracted both fervent support and intense criticism.
His appearance at the mayoral residence has therefore triggered a wave of reaction from political observers and community leaders across New York.
The timing of the dinner has only intensified the debate. As VIN News noted in its coverage, the gathering occurred only a day after an alarming security incident occurred in the city that authorities say involved an ISIS-inspired terror plot targeting a protest near Gracie Mansion.
In that incident, two young men were arrested after allegedly throwing improvised explosive devices toward a crowd and police officers during a confrontation outside the mayor’s residence. Investigators later said the suspects had pledged allegiance to ISIS and intended to cause mass casualties.
The alleged terror attempt, which remains under investigation by federal and local authorities, has heightened concerns about extremist violence in the city.
Against that backdrop, critics say the decision to host a controversial activist linked to pro-Hamas demonstrations risks sending a troubling message at a moment when New Yorkers are already grappling with fears about radicalization and terrorism.
Supporters of the mayor, however, argue that the Ramadan dinner should be viewed within the broader context of outreach to Muslim communities in New York City. Ramadan observances at Gracie Mansion are not unprecedented, and previous administrations have also hosted interfaith events intended to recognize the city’s diverse religious traditions.
Nevertheless, the identity of one particular guest has overshadowed the broader purpose of the gathering.
As VIN News reported, Khalil has been a visible presence at demonstrations connected to the war between Israel and Hamas. Those protests, which erupted on campuses and city streets following the outbreak of the conflict, often featured heated rhetoric about U.S. foreign policy, Israel’s military actions in Gaza, and Palestinian political aspirations.
For many observers, Khalil’s participation in such demonstrations has made him emblematic of a broader movement that critics say has blurred the distinction between political advocacy and support for terrorist groups.
The controversy surrounding the dinner also reflects the uniquely sensitive political climate of New York City, which is home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel and one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States.
Community leaders have repeatedly warned that rhetoric associated with the Middle East conflict has spilled over into domestic tensions, contributing to rising reports of antisemitic incidents as well as Islamophobic harassment.
In recent months, city officials have faced the delicate challenge of addressing these tensions while attempting to maintain a sense of civic unity.
For Mayor Mamdani, the situation represents a particularly complex balancing act. As New York’s first Muslim mayor, he has frequently spoken about the importance of religious representation and cultural inclusion. Yet critics argue that such commitments must also be paired with clear moral boundaries when it comes to individuals associated with extremist or pro-terror rhetoric.
The mayor’s office has not issued an extensive public statement addressing Khalil’s presence at the dinner. However, aides have indicated that the Ramadan gathering was intended as a community event rather than a political endorsement of any particular guest.
Still, the optics of the event have sparked intense debate.
According to the information provided in the VIN News report, some observers believe the controversy underscores the broader challenges facing municipal leaders in an era when international conflicts can quickly reverberate within local politics.
Others say the incident highlights the need for greater scrutiny regarding which individuals are welcomed into symbolic civic spaces such as Gracie Mansion.
The mayor’s official residence has long served as a venue for diplomatic receptions, cultural celebrations, and political gatherings. Invitations to events held there often carry symbolic significance, reflecting the values and priorities of the administration hosting them.
For that reason, critics argue that the guest list for such events inevitably becomes a matter of public interest.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the alleged ISIS-inspired bombing attempt continues to unfold. Federal agents and NYPD detectives are examining digital evidence and other materials connected to the suspects arrested during the incident.
Authorities have emphasized that the case remains under active investigation, and additional details may emerge in the coming weeks.
As VIN News reported, the proximity of the two developments—the alleged terror plot and the controversial Ramadan dinner—has amplified public scrutiny of City Hall.
Whether the controversy ultimately fades or evolves into a larger political dispute remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the intersection of global conflicts, local politics, and questions of security continues to shape the public conversation in America’s largest city.
In a metropolis defined by its diversity and complexity, even a single dinner invitation can become a lightning rod for debate about values, leadership, and the boundaries of civic engagement.

Cannot stand to look at his disgusting smile. He is a nightmare that I hope we all wake up from soon
