New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is defending his controversial decision to host activist Mahmoud Khalil at the mayoral residence, insisting the move was meant to uphold free-speech principles despite fierce criticism from political opponents and pro-Israel advocates.
According to a report by the NY Post, Mamdani said the gathering at Gracie Mansion was intended to highlight his commitment to protecting the rights of all New Yorkers, even those whose views spark strong disagreements.
As the NY Post reported, the mayor hosted Khalil and members of his family during a Ramadan meal at the Upper East Side residence. Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist and former student involved in demonstrations at Columbia University, has become a highly polarizing figure in New York political debates surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Defending the invitation, Mamdani said his responsibility as mayor is to protect both the safety and civil liberties of people across the city. As the NY Post reported, he framed the decision as part of a broader commitment to the First Amendment, arguing that democratic societies must tolerate controversial viewpoints rather than suppress them.
Still, the dinner quickly ignited backlash. Critics argued that inviting Khalil to the mayor’s official residence sent the wrong signal, especially given the activist’s past comments about the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack in Israel and his involvement in protests that some Jewish organizations say targeted Jewish students. As the NY Post reported, several pro-Israel advocates and political figures condemned the event, calling it offensive and inappropriate for the city’s top elected official.
The controversy comes amid a broader national debate about free speech, campus activism and antisemitism. Khalil had previously drawn attention after being detained by immigration authorities over questions related to his green-card application and alleged ties to groups viewed as sympathetic to Hamas. According to the NY Post, his arrest and detention sparked demonstrations in New York, with supporters portraying him as a victim of political retaliation while critics accused him of promoting extremist views.
Despite the criticism, Mamdani has remained unapologetic. As the NY Post reported, he praised Khalil’s resilience and said the dinner was also meant to recognize what he described as the personal hardship the activist endured during his legal battles.
The mayor’s social-media posts about the gathering — including a photograph from inside the historic residence — further amplified the controversy online. Critics quickly flooded social media with condemnation, accusing the mayor of legitimizing someone they believe has defended or minimized acts of terrorism. Supporters, however, argued that Mamdani was standing up for civil liberties and refusing to silence dissenting voices.
Political analysts say the dispute underscores the deep divisions surrounding Middle East politics in New York, home to both large Jewish and Arab communities. It also reflects the challenges Mamdani has faced early in his tenure leading the nation’s largest city, where decisions tied to global issues can quickly ignite local political battles.
