A wealthy hedge fund heir is being accused of reckless, booze-fueled behavior after allegedly flipping his family’s oversized golf cart during a late-night joyride at a multimillion-dollar Southampton estate — leaving two friends seriously injured, as the NY Post reported.
Garrett Huff, now 23, had spent hours drinking with friends John Mascali and Heather Dailey during an August 2024 gathering at his parents’ lavish Hamptons property, according to court papers cited by the NY Post. The trio had been at the beach earlier in the day before continuing the party in the basement of the family’s sprawling 10-bedroom mansion, where they played “wine pong.”
As the night wound down, the group decided to take the family’s three-row golf cart back toward the beach one final time, the NY Post reported. That decision would allegedly end in disaster.
According to lawsuits filed in Suffolk County Supreme Court, Huff suddenly slammed on the accelerator without warning and sent the cart “at full speed” toward a roundabout, where he attempted what the plaintiffs described as a “dangerous stunt,” pushing the vehicle past its tipping point.
“In no more than 10 seconds, the golf cart was at full speed,” Mascali told the NY Post. “The last thing I remember was feeling the golf cart lift up off the ground.”
The cart overturned, violently ejecting Mascali and Dailey onto the pavement and knocking both unconscious, the NY Post reported, citing the legal filings. The pair are now suing Huff and his parents, Craig and Tracey Huff, seeking unspecified damages.
Mascali, a Sag Harbor native now 24, suffered spinal fractures and a concussion, according to the NY Post. When he regained consciousness, he said he saw Dailey lying nearby with blood pouring from her head.
“The only thing I vividly remember was seeing Heather in a deformed position, with tons of blood leaking out of her head,” Mascali told the NY Post. “I thought she was dead.”
Both victims were rushed to a local hospital. Dailey, a New Jersey resident, required five staples to close a head wound and now suffers from severe migraines, the NY Post reported. She said she was terrified when she saw Mascali motionless on the ground, fearing he had been killed.
The lawsuit paints a troubling picture of prior behavior, alleging the Huffs were well aware of their son’s history of reckless golf cart joyrides, “especially under the influence of alcohol,” according to the NY Post. The complaint claims Garrett Huff had previously injured another friend’s hand during a similar stunt.
Garrett Huff’s father, Craig A. Huff, founded private equity firm Reservoir Capital in 1998, while his mother Tracey Huff has drawn headlines in the past for extravagant spending, the NY Post noted. The family also owns a luxury Fifth Avenue apartment valued at more than $11 million.
Following the crash, the family allegedly disposed of the golf cart altogether, according to the lawsuit cited by the NY Post.
