The red lights have returned to Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, New York City, an area known for its challenges with prostitution. Progressive Democratic Reps represent this district. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Grace Meng have recently seen an increase in open solicitation from sex workers alongside vendors selling a variety of goods, including some that may be counterfeit or stolen. Despite ongoing police efforts to restore order, community members are calling for further action and collaboration.

Residents have expressed concerns about the impact of these activities on their daily lives. Many feel that their elected representatives have not adequately addressed the issues, likening the situation to a “Red Light District” or an unregulated marketplace. Some have even affectionately referred to this area as the “Avenue of the Sweethearts,” highlighting its reputation for sex work.

“Our community deserves better,” said Ramses Frias, as interviewed by Foxnews.com, a local activist and Republican City Council candidate. “Residents have voiced their frustrations and are eager for solutions that will allow them to feel safe in their own homes.” He noted the presence of gangs, such as the 18th Street gang and Tren de Aragua, as additional concerns for safety in the area.

A recent visit to Roosevelt Avenue after a town hall meeting with Ocasio-Cortez revealed significant activity on the street, with many women openly soliciting clients amid families enjoying their evening. The layout of the area shows a clear division, with most sex workers visible on Meng’s side. At the same time, vendors primarily support Ocasio-Cortez, illustrating the complexities of community dynamics and representation.

Just before the town hall, sidewalks were bustling with vendors selling a range of products, from grilled meats to counterfeit electronics, creating an atmosphere rich in commerce but lacking in regulation. The variety of goods, including food from stalls without proper labeling or apparent health standards, raises questions about safety and community well-being.

Residents are urging for the continuation of Operation Restore Roosevelt, a targeted police initiative launched in October. They believe that solidifying these efforts into a long-term strategy is key to addressing the issues they face, especially as warmer weather approaches, which could further increase street activities.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry noted the positive impact of the enhanced police presence, which has included over 200 additional officers. Daughtry told Foxnews.com, “[w] e’ve seen a notable reduction in crime, with significant drops in robbery, felony assault, burglary, and grand larceny,” Daughtry reported. This progress is encouraging and highlights the effectiveness of focused law enforcement efforts; however, continued collaboration with community leaders and representatives is essential for achieving lasting change.

For example, shortly after the town hall, authorities successfully shut down a troubling brothel operating above a corner store, addressing a long-standing community concern. This action reflects a commitment to improving neighborhood safety and demonstrates the potential for effective collaboration between local officials and law enforcement.

According to Frias, neighborhood residents are increasingly aware of the illicit activities occurring in their midst and are ready for substantive changes. “We want to work together with our elected officials to create a safer community,” he emphasized to Foxnews.com. “Stricter laws and a commitment to safety should be a priority.”

Calls for greater engagement from Ocasio-Cortez and Meng have emerged, with community members expressing a desire for their representatives to take a more active role in addressing the pressing issues facing their neighborhoods.
