In a twist of irony, the chief advisor for New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, made a surprising call for the federal government to “close the borders.” This unexpected statement created a stir among liberal politicians and led to a swift clarification from another high-ranking official within City Hall.

Lewis-Martin’s remarks came during an interview on PIX 11, where she was asked about the city’s efforts to address the right-to-shelter policy amid the challenges of caring for a large number of migrants in the city. She stated, “The federal government needs to do its job. We need the federal government, the Congress members, the Senate, and the president to do its job: Close the borders. And until you close the borders, you need to come up with a full-on decompression strategy where you can take all of our migrants and move them throughout our 50 states.”

Hours later, Deputy Mayor for Communications, Fabien Levy, clarified the Adams administration’s stance, emphasizing that they believe the United States should continue to welcome immigrants while also advocating for a “decompression strategy at the border.”

Levy stated on X (formerly Twitter), “The U.S. will always do its part to be a country that takes in those seeking refuge from war, discrimination, & strife, but as we’ve stated repeatedly, we need a real decompression strategy at the border so that all communities across the U.S. can do their part in providing the compassion & care NYC has provided to more than 118,000 asylum seekers since last year.”

Despite welcoming over 100,000 migrants since the previous year, Lewis-Martin pointed out that the city is currently providing care for more than 61,000 migrants. Some liberal City Council members criticized Lewis-Martin’s call to close the borders, describing it as “xenophobic Republican talking points” that do not align with New York City’s historical reputation as a welcoming beacon for immigrants.

However, other elected officials expressed support for Lewis-Martin’s statement, highlighting the need for border security and a screening process for credible asylum seekers. The irony deepened when New York Governor Kathy Hochul made similar remarks, stating that the southern border was “too open” and emphasizing the importance of limits and controls at the border. She stressed that while New York has a tradition of welcoming immigrants, there must be reasonable limits and congressional actions to manage the situation.

New York Representative Nicole Malliotakis seized on these statements, directing attention to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand as key figures standing in the way of securing the border and addressing the ongoing crisis. The situation underscores the evolving positions of some Democrats on the issue of border security, highlighting the complexity of the immigration debate within the party.

The Democrat party during the Trump era unified under the pro illegal migrant umbrella. The mainstream media breathlessly published articles of Trump placing “kids in cages”, AOC took an infamous photo op at the border, Democrats chanted “no human is illegal”; and now the Democrat party are reversing their ideals. The virtuous feeling of cheering for the “poor migrant” one gets when partaking in the group think exercise of virtue signaling; evidently is not worth the price.
