Advanced imaging procedures with a focus on improving cancer care are getting a critical upgrade after
Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center announced the $6 million opening of an interventional radiology suite, anchored by the best-in-class Philips Azurion 7 image-guided therapy system.
Interventional radiology (IR) is the workhorse of modern health care, making minimally invasive procedures possible – from tumor ablation and dissolution of blood clots to precise placement of catheters and chemotherapy ports – as well as a range of emergency interventions such as targeting the source of internal bleeding. The suite augments Northwell Health’s already robust radiology program, giving the hospital three IR suites and paving the way for more advanced cancer biopsies and new way to perform neurointerventions.
“Long Island Jewish Medical Center has transformed itself into one of the nation’s leading cancer hospitals and this technology enhances the important work our physicians are doing,” said
Lenny Nartowicz, MBA, president of LIJ and a Northwell senior vice president. “This advanced interventional radiology suite increases access to care and provides ever more precise targeting for a host of medical problems.”
The 1,100-square-foot space features the Philips Azurion 7, a touch-screen, image-guided therapy platform with the ability to rotate on eight axes for maximum 3-D imaging flexibility of the patient. The new construction totaled $6 million, which includes ancillary equipment and IT, as well as additional recovery space. In addition, the Azurion 7 will allow oncologists to perform more challenging biopsies of lesions to diagnose and treat a variety of cancers.
“This is the next generation of interventional radiology, which translates into better image quality, more precise guidance and – significantly for the patient – lower dose radiation,” said Ross Wank, MD, executive vice chair of radiology in Northwell’s Central Market. “The Azurion 7 is a game-changer in terms of improving patient safety and clinical outcomes.”
Long Island Jewish Medical Center is a 583-bed, tertiary care teaching hospital that treats more than 80,000 patients each year. Home to the
R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital and the
Katz Women’s Hospital, LIJ is a Magnet-rated facility with nine clinical specialties ranked in the
top 50 nationally by
U.S. News & World Report, and is A rated by Leapfrog.
“We are excited to open a new IR suite along with all of the new equipment and technology that it holds,” said
Mathew Foley, MD, medical director, LIJ. “Our physicians and nurses deserve to work with superior equipment and our patients demand the best results.”
