Lenox Hill Hospital has earned a three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for its rectal cancer program. The medical center is the first and only hospital in New York City – and one of only five in New York State – to be nationally accredited for this clinical specialty. The prestigious designation is bestowed upon centers that deliver the highest level of comprehensive rectal cancer care. Only 68 programs in the country have been presented with this honor, including Northwell Health’s Huntington Hospital and North Shore University Hospital.
The accreditation is granted to oncology programs that demonstrate compliance with rigorous NAPRC standards relating to program management, clinical services, and quality improvement measures. Part of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute – one of the largest oncology programs in the New York metropolitan area – Lenox Hill’s colorectal cancer program is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of fellowship-trained, board-certified specialists, including surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, and pathologists. The hospital is an internationally recognized leader in the treatment of a wide range of colon and rectal conditions with minimally invasive techniques and state-of-the-art technology.
“This prominent distinction is an important acknowledgment of the outstanding care provided by Lenox Hill’s colorectal oncology team,” said Joseph Martz, MD, vice chairman of surgery and chief of colorectal surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, who spearheaded the pursuit of the NAPRC accreditation. “I congratulate the entire team for this impressive achievement highlighting their superb performance and commitment to providing exceptional care to our patients.”
Lenox Hill Hospital has been ranked high-performing in colon cancer surgery, as well as in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery for 2022-2023 by U.S. News and World Report. According to the consumer review publication, the hospital’s cancer program is ranked 50th in the nation. Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting consumers, physicians, and health systems, also awarded Lenox Hill Hospital 2023 Excellence Awards for gastrointestinal care and gastrointestinal surgery.
While incidence and mortality rates are dropping, The National Cancer Institute estimated there would be over 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer and 52,000 deaths from the disease in the United States in 2022. It is the fourth most common cancer behind breast, prostate, lung and bronchus cancers. The American Cancer Society reports that colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
