The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed Fox News that four employees are being fired for circumventing leadership and unilaterally authorizing a massive payment for migrant hotel accommodations in New York City. According to Fox News, these employees misused federal funds intended for emergency relief, instead directing them to house illegal migrants in luxury hotels—a move that has drawn outrage from lawmakers and citizens alike.
Tech billionaire and director of DOGE Elon Musk exposed the controversial payment on X (formerly Twitter), writing that FEMA sent $59 million last week to high-end hotels in New York City for illegal immigrants. Fox News reported that the DHS acted swiftly in response, terminating FEMA’s Chief Financial Officer, two program analysts, and a grant specialist responsible for the unauthorized allocation.
In a statement provided to Fox News, the DHS emphasized its commitment to preventing such misappropriations under President Donald Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership. “DHS will not sit idly and allow deep state activists to undermine the will and safety of the American people,” the department said.
Following Fox News’ coverage of the scandal, Elon Musk doubled down on his criticism of FEMA, arguing that these funds were intended for American disaster relief, not for sheltering illegal immigrants in luxury accommodations. In his post, Musk wrote, “A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds.”
Fox News also reported on Rep. Mike Lawler’s (R-N.Y.) reaction to the firings, stating that they were “long overdue.” Lawler blasted FEMA and New York City for misappropriating funds originally designated for disaster-stricken Americans, saying that the sanctuary city has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars on illegal immigrants, including criminals.
“I applaud DHS for taking action under President Trump’s leadership,” Lawler told Fox News. “New York has been incentivized to continue these policies, and it has to stop.”
During President Biden’s administration, FEMA was accused of failing to provide adequate assistance for American disaster victims while simultaneously directing funds toward migrant housing.
According to Fox News, House Speaker Mike Johnson clarified that emergency disaster relief funds and FEMA’s immigration allocations are separate, but he insisted that FEMA should not be involved in the border crisis at all. FEMA currently works in partnership with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) under the Shelter and Services Program (SSP)—a federally funded initiative that supports the housing and care of migrants who have been released into the U.S.
As reported by Fox News, a New York City Hall spokesperson confirmed that the city had received millions of dollars from the Biden administration in the past week to support illegal migrants. Of the $59.3 million payment, approximately $19 million was spent on direct hotel costs, while the remaining funds covered expenses such as food, security, and other services.
However, Fox News noted that NYC officials insisted the funds were not part of a disaster relief grant, contradicting claims made by critics who argue that taxpayer dollars were diverted from much-needed disaster aid.
In response to Fox News’ revelations, President Trump issued a scathing statement on Truth Social, calling for the complete termination of FEMA.
“THE BIDEN-RUN FEMA HAS BEEN A DISASTER,” Trump declared in his post. “FEMA should be terminated! It has been slow and totally ineffective. Individual states should handle storms, etc., as they come. BIG SAVINGS, FAR MORE EFFICIENT!!!”
