Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan District Attorney, recently announced the sentencing of Perin Jacobchuk, 34, for two separate, violent hate crimes—one against a Jewish man and the other targeting an Asian woman. According to a recently published report at the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) website, Jacobchuk received three-and-a-half years in state prison for his brutal attack on a 64-year-old Jewish man and an additional one-and-a-third to four years for attacking a 63-year-old Asian woman. The sentences will be served concurrently.
Bragg underscored the gravity of these offenses in his statement: “Perin Jacobchuk will serve state prison time for committing two, separate, brutal attacks fueled by his prejudices and biases. These hate crimes left both New Yorkers with physical injuries, which they have thankfully fully recovered from. I hope that the resolution of this case can offer the victims comfort in knowing that Jacobchuk has been held accountable.” The JNS report highlighted that Jacobchuk pleaded guilty to both incidents, acknowledging his role in the vicious assaults.
The first attack occurred on December 4, 2022, in Central Park, Manhattan. According to the report on JNS, Jacobchuk directed a Nazi salute at a 64-year-old Jewish man while shouting anti-Semitic slurs and remarks, including “kill the Jews.” When the victim approached Jacobchuk to confront his behavior, the assailant escalated the verbal harassment, repeating the same hateful comments and slurs.
As reported by JNS, the Jewish man attempted to leave, but Jacobchuk followed him persistently, riding on a bicycle and continuing his anti-Semitic tirade. In a sudden escalation, Jacobchuk punched the man in the back of the head, knocking him violently to the ground. The district attorney’s office, via JNS, detailed the extent of the man’s injuries, which were significant: a concussion, a broken bone in his right hand, a broken kneecap, and extensive dental damage. The injuries caused severe limitations, making it difficult for the victim to eat, use his hand, or bear weight on his injured knee for several months.
The JNS report emphasized that the attack reflects the increasingly dangerous reality of anti-Semitic hate crimes across the country. Despite the victim’s eventual physical recovery, the emotional and psychological toll of such an incident cannot be understated.
Jacobchuk’s violent behavior was not isolated to anti-Semitic hatred. In another case reported by JNS, he targeted a 63-year-old Asian woman and her husband on August 15, 2021, near West 54th Street and Broadway in Manhattan. Jacobchuk approached the couple, yelling racially charged slurs such as “go back to China.” He then escalated the attack by running up behind the woman, grabbing her shoulders, and shoving her forcefully to the ground.
The victim’s fall onto the concrete staircase of the Ameritania Hotel resulted in injuries to her back and legs as she hit the hard stairs. JNS noted that these types of hate-driven assaults have become increasingly frequent in New York City, particularly amid rising anti-Asian sentiment.
Jacobchuk’s guilty plea to both assaults paved the way for the concurrent prison sentences announced by Bragg’s office. As reported by JNS, the New York City Department of Correction is responsible for managing Jacobchuk’s imprisonment. Bragg’s office clarified that Jacobchuk remained held on bail throughout the duration of the case.
The resolution of the case is seen as a small step toward justice for the victims, and Bragg’s firm stance on prosecuting hate crimes highlights a growing legal emphasis on addressing bias-driven violence in New York City.
