Northwell Health’s Lenox Hill Hospital and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center, including its division LIJ Forest Hills, have been named High Performing Hospitals for Maternity Care in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 Best Hospitals rankings. This prestigious accolade is the highest designation awarded by U.S. News in its annual evaluation of maternity care, underscoring the hospitals’ dedication to delivering safe, compassionate and evidence-based care to expectant mothers and their babies. It also emphasizes Northwell’s unwavering commitment to innovation, health equity and addressing key challenges in maternal health.

The High Performing recognition highlights Lenox Hill’s and LIJ’s exceptional outcomes and patient-centered approach, as evaluated by critical quality metrics, such as frequency of C-sections in lower-risk pregnancies, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, severe unexpected newborn complications, adherence to birthing-friendly practices, and transparency in addressing racial and ethnic disparities in care. U.S. News evaluated 817 hospitals nationwide for its 2025 maternity care rankings, awarding the top honor to only half of the facilities reviewed.

“As leaders in obstetrics, our teams at Lenox Hill, LIJ Medical Center and LIJ Forest Hills continually raise the bar, providing the safest, most advanced maternity care to expectant mothers during one of life’s most transformative moments,” said Michael Nimaroff, MD, senior vice president and executive director of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwell Health. “This distinguished recognition from U.S. News is a testament to our health system’s enduring commitment of advancing maternal and newborn care with expertise, diligence and innovation.”

These hospitals consistently set high standards for maternal care quality and safety, with LIJ ranking 13th and Lenox Hill 33rd nationally for obstetrics and gynecology in U.S. News’ 2024-25 Best Hospitals ratings released earlier this year. Katz Women’s Hospital at LIJ, as well as its Forest Hills campus, stand out as a designated Baby-Friendly facilities by Baby Friendly USA, promoting breastfeeding and mother-infant bonding. LIJ is also one of only 73 medical centers nationwide to be named a Center of Excellence by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) and is one of only 36 to earn an Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care from the Joint Commission for providing exemplary care during pregnancy.

Lenox Hill is a leader in advanced prenatal diagnostics, becoming the first hospital in New York State to receive the Detailed First Trimester Obstetrics Ultrasound accreditation from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, a distinction that showcases its comprehensive care approach, including detailed anatomical scans, preeclampsia assessments and neurosonography. The facility has also been named one of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals by Newsweek and awarded five stars for vaginal delivery by Healthgrades.

As the largest provider of obstetric services in New York State, accounting for nearly one percent of all births in the U.S., Northwell Health is driving meaningful change in maternity care. This is exemplified by the launch of the Center for Maternal Health, focused on reducing the U.S. maternal mortality rate, particularly among Black women, who are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. The newly opened Center for High-Risk Pregnancy and Fetal Health offers specialized care for complex pregnancies, including those affected by diabetes, cardiac disease and cancer. Additionally, Northwell has introduced the nation’s first AI-driven pregnancy chatbot, providing 24/7 support to expectant mothers, identifying potential risks and enhancing patient safety.

U.S. News, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, began evaluating maternity care hospitals in 2021 to help guide expectant parents in making informed decisions about the maternity services that best meet their family’s needs.
