The Big Apple was the clear winner in the Michelin awards announcements made on Monday. The city that never sleeps was awarded with 13 new Guide Stars by the illustrious guide book published since 1900 by the French tire company Michelin.
The glitzy 2024 award ceremony was held on Monday night at the Glasshouse in Hell’s Kitchen.
As reported by Crain’s NY, restaurants in New York, Chicago and Washington D.C. were honored with coveted Michelin awards— but the most honors were given to NY restaurants. Only three restaurants outside New York earned stars—and those were all singular stars.
NY restaurants got a total of 13 new stars. Korean restaurant Jungsik, located in Tribeca, led the pack, being upgraded to the elite three-star category, up from two stars. Since 2012, no restaurant in New York has earned the three star honor for the first time. Only five other NYC restaurants have this distinction at all. The other four include: Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Masa and Per Se. Jungsik is led by Chef and owner Mr. Yim Jung Sik and Executive Chef Daeik Kim. Per Crain’s, Michelin’s international awards director Gwendal Poullennec praised Jungsik for its “originality and impeccable presentation” in a written announcement of the award. The restaurant had earned its first star in 2012, and was elevated to two stars in 2013. “We are so happy to be a part of this,” Yim said. “So many people before us created a legacy. We just keep moving forward.”
At the 2024 Michelin awards ceremony, three other New York city restaurants earned two stars, including: César in SoHo, the century old downtown address led by César Ramirez; Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare in Hell’s Kitchen, now under Chefs Max Natmessnig and Marco Prins; and newcomer Sushi Sho, opened just this March in Midtown, near the NY Public Library, and led by Chef Keiji Nakazawa.
Eight other Big Apple eateries received the one-star distinction for the first time. These awardees include: Bar Miller, Café Boulud, Corima, La Bastide by Andrea Calstier, Joo Ok, Nōksu, Shota Omakase and YingTao. Now, there are a total of 55 one-star Michelin awarded restaurants in New York, per Crain’s.
Outside of New York, Mita and Omakase at Barrack’s Row, both in Washington D.C, earned single stars. In Chicago, Cariño also earned one star.
Per Crain’s, Michelin also doled out an assortment of special awards. Michelin’s green star, which recognizes restaurant leaders for sustainability, was awarded to One White Street. One White Street, first opened in August 2021, is a Contemporary American restaurant set in a historic Tribeca townhouse and led by Chef Austin Johnson.
The yearly Michelin Guides are a series of guide books that have been published by the French tire company Michelin since 1900, founded 124 years ago by brothers Édouard Michelin and André Michelin. Michelin also publishes the Green Guides, a series of general guides to cities, regions, and countries around the world.
“These new restaurants joining the MICHELIN Star family showcase some of the best talent across the culinary world, while bringing about each chef’s unique flavor and individuality,” Poullennec wrote about the New York restaurants awarded.
