Argentine President Javier Milei Celebrates Trump’s Victory as a Shared Vision for Liberty & Prosperity at Mar-a-Lago Event

Edited by: Fern Sidman

Argentine President Javier Milei has openly celebrated Donald Trump’s recent presidential victory, calling the president-elect a kindred spirit in the global battle for liberty and economic revival. Speaking at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort during a victory celebration on Thursday, Milei shared his hopes for a robust partnership with the incoming U.S. administration, according to a report by Bloomberg.com.

“I am exhilarated to be able to share with the new United States administration the same level of freedom, and I’m convinced that together, we will restore it to the place it deserves,” Milei declared in a speech delivered in Spanish at an America First Policy Institute event.

Milei, 54, a libertarian economist who took office in November, has been vocal about his admiration for Trump. As per the information provided in the Bloomberg.com report. Milei described the global political landscape as being under threat from “woke” ideologies, despotism, and terror, which he argued undermine the “Western legacy.” He emphasized the need for alliances that would safeguard these shared values.

“Today, the winds of freedom are blowing much stronger,” he stated, reinforcing his alignment with Trump’s America First principles. Bloomberg.com also reported that this was not the first meeting between the two leaders; they previously met backstage earlier this year at a Conservative Political Action Conference event where Milei also spoke.

Trump reciprocated Milei’s sentiments during the Mar-a-Lago event, praising the Argentine leader for his achievements. “Your speech was beautiful, but the job you’ve done is incredible,” Trump said, according to the report on Bloomberg.com. “Make Argentina great again. You know, he’s a MAGA person. And you know, he’s doing that.”

Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and prominent advocate for free speech, was also in attendance and received thanks from Milei for his efforts in promoting freedom of expression globally.

Milei’s tenure in Argentina has been marked by notable economic progress, as was highlighted in the  Bloomberg.com report. Since assuming office during a severe economic crisis last December, his administration has managed to cool inflation, stabilize wage growth, and foster signs of economic recovery in the third quarter, pulling the country out of a brutal recession.

Despite these achievements, Milei faces significant challenges. Argentina remains an impoverished nation, with over half of its 46 million citizens living in poverty. The president is hopeful that Trump’s presidency will ease negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over Argentina’s $44 billion loan program, as was indicated in the Bloomberg.com report. This partnership, Milei believes, is crucial for Argentina’s path toward sustained economic recovery.

While Milei celebrated in Florida, his administration stirred controversy at the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan. According to Bloomberg.com, the Argentine delegation abruptly withdrew from the summit less than four days in, leaving negotiators scrambling to adapt to their absence. The move has raised eyebrows as the summit seeks to finalize a trillion-dollar climate finance agreement.

Milei’s administration has yet to explain the sudden withdrawal, but the decision aligns with his previous criticism of international climate frameworks like the Paris Agreement and the UN’s 2030 Agenda on sustainability. His stance reflects a broader skepticism of global climate policies, which he has described as antithetical to economic freedom and national sovereignty.

Milei’s enthusiastic support for Trump signifies more than just political alignment—it emphasizes his vision for an alliance based on shared ideals of liberty and economic revival. As the Bloomberg.com report highlighted, both leaders share a disdain for globalism and a commitment to prioritizing national interests.

Whether this budding partnership will yield tangible benefits for Argentina, particularly in its negotiations with the IMF, remains to be seen. However, Milei’s presence at Mar-a-Lago—and his symbolic alignment with Trump’s vision—signals a clear intent to position Argentina as a key partner in a global movement for freedom and prosperity.

For now, Milei’s focus remains on navigating Argentina’s pressing domestic challenges while reinforcing his administration’s commitment to a libertarian agenda on the global stage. As he declared in his remarks, “The winds of freedom are blowing much stronger,” a sentiment both he and Trump appear determined to bring to fruition.
