New York Mets fans endured another heartbreaking but all-too-familiar moment Sunday night when their team fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-5, ending their playoff run. For many, this crushing loss feels like a rite of passage as a blue and orange faithful, but as the NY Post reports, fans have quickly shifted their energy toward rooting against their cross-town rivals, the Yankees, in the upcoming World Series.

“It’s always tough when you get this close. It breaks your heart because you invest so much into your team all season long,” Walter Nilsson, a 60-year-old Long Island resident, told the NY Post during a massive watch party at Citi Field. “When the playoffs came around, and we had the tease of a Subway Series, things got really exciting. It’s extra salt in the wound that the Yankees made it to the final series, and we didn’t. But that’s what being a Mets fan is all about—picking yourself up next year and believing that this is it.”

According to the NY Post, the Mets hosted a viewing party for Game 6 of the National League Championship Series at their Queens home, hoping to celebrate a victory. Unfortunately, fans began trickling out of the stadium as the game slipped away in the late innings, realizing that their dreams of a Subway Series had vanished for another year.

Franky Bwire, a 33-year-old Sunnyside local, shared his frustration with the NY Post. “I’m pretty depressed. It’s what I expected, but I’m still really bummed out. We had the talent, we had the management, all the pieces in place,” he lamented.

Now that the Mets’ season has come to an end, fans are looking for a new allegiance, with many embracing the Dodgers—the team that just knocked them out of the playoffs. As Long Island resident Joe Viviani, 64, told the NY Post, “Dodgers all the way, baby. Five minutes ago, I wanted them to burn in hell, but now I’m a diehard LA fan till the end of October. I hope they win in four.”

Lisa Krueger, 54, of Manhattan, echoed that sentiment, telling the NY Post, “F—k no I’m not rooting for the Yankees. I don’t particularly like LA right now because they just whipped our a—, but I’d get at least a little satisfaction seeing them do the same to those full-of-themselves Yankees.”

Tim Murray, from Queens, was adamant about his loyalty, telling the NY Post, “The Dodgers denied us a Subway Series where we would’ve wrapped up the Yankees ourselves, so now we’re leaving it up to them to do the job.”

The Mets’ season had been a rollercoaster, starting slowly before making a thrilling playoff push. As the NY Post notes, they topped the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies in the early rounds, only to be ousted by Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers.

Still, fans like Luis Adames from Washington Heights found a silver lining in the loss. “Listen, the better team is going to the World Series, and my hat goes off to LA,” Adames, 42, told the NY Post. “But my hat goes off to the Mets, too, because they fought and fought and would not give up. If they can do it this year, they’ve got the formula to do it next year, so go Mets!”
