Pro-Israel Leader Assaulted Amidst Chaotic Clashes as Pro-Palestinian Protesters Swarm Union Square

Edited by: Fern Sidman

The violent confrontation between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Manhattan on the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel marks a troubling escalation in tensions. According to a report on Monday in The New York Post, a pro-Israel demonstrator, Todd Richman, was assaulted and bloodied by a pro-Hamas crowd as emotions ran high in the streets. Richman, a co-founder of the Democratic Majority for Israel, was targeted while holding an Israeli flag, a gesture that quickly became a flashpoint amidst the charged atmosphere.

Richman’s attempts to stand his ground were documented on social media, where videos captured the intense scene. As The New York Post reported, Richman was surrounded by protesters draped in keffiyehs, a symbol often associated with Palestinian solidarity, who jeered and tried to forcibly take his flag. Despite the aggression, Richman did not back down, shouting, “Get the f–k off the flag. Get off it.” His resolve to protect the flag from being torn away only seemed to fuel the crowd’s hostility, ultimately resulting in him being struck and left with a bloody nose.

The situation quickly deteriorated as the mob closed in on Richman. In the chaotic moments that followed, The New York Post described how one protester struck him, while others hurled insults, including calling him a “baby killer,” a slur that lacks any veracity and which reflects the deep-seated animosity felt by many towards Israel in the context of its military actions. Despite being outnumbered, Richman’s defiance in the face of aggression was emblematic of the larger ideological clash playing out on the streets of the Big Apple on Monday.

The police eventually intervened, moving to break up the crowd that had gathered around Richman. As The New York Post reported, officers dispersed the protesters who continued to shout, “Get out of here,” illustrating the volatile and increasingly hostile environment surrounding pro-Israel demonstrators in New York. The fact that Richman was not only mocked but physically attacked for expressing his support for Israel calls attention to the severity of the tensions that have erupted since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.

On Tuesday, Richman released the following statement:

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out to check on me. Rest assured — I am fine. As Americans, we have the right to protest, but yesterday, on the one-year anniversary of the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust, pro-Hamas agitators in New York City crossed a line.

“I am a proud American Jew, and the overwhelming support I’ve received from the Governor of New York, state and city officials, members of Congress, friends, family, and many strangers has deeply moved me. I am deeply grateful for the quick response of the NYPD and FDNY for getting me to safety and tending to my medical needs.

“Pro-Israel Americans must be able to walk freely and fearlessly through the streets of New York. What happened was unacceptable, but it has only strengthened my resolve.”

This incident is part of a broader pattern of unrest that has marked the past year, as pro-Israel and pro-Hamas demonstrations continue to flare across the United States. The anniversary of the attack has reignited these deep divisions, with the pro-Hamas camp feeling emboldened to express their views in increasingly confrontational ways. For Richman, standing up for Israel in public became a dangerous act, one that left him bloodied but still resolute in his support.

The attack on Richman also reflects the growing intensity of public demonstrations related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, especially in major cities such as New York, where large populations with vested interests on both sides of the conflict reside. As The New York Post noted, this particular incident serves as a stark reminder of how deeply polarized the issue has become, and how public expressions of support for Israel can quickly devolve into violence. The ability to hold peaceful protests, a cornerstone of democratic society, is increasingly under threat as emotions reach a boiling point.
