In a surprising development, former President Donald Trump is within striking distance of President Joe Biden in a new poll of New York voters. According to a report that appeared on Thursday in The New York Post, The Siena College survey of 805 registered voters shows Biden leading Trump by a margin of 47% to 39%, but the poll’s margin of error of 4.1% suggests the race could be even closer. Trump’s gains among Black and Jewish voters are significant factors in the narrowing gap.
One of the most striking findings of the poll is Trump’s increased support among Black and Latino New Yorkers. According to the Siena survey, Trump has the backing of 29% of Black voters and 26% of Latino voters, as was indicated in The Post report. This is a notable increase from the 2020 election, where exit polls indicated Trump garnered just 6% of the Black vote and 22% of the Latino vote in New York.
Trump’s appeal to these demographics appears to be driven by his focus on issues such as illegal immigration and economic challenges, as well as high inflation, which he argues disproportionately affect minority communities, as was indicated in the information provided in The Post report. At a rally in the South Bronx on May 23rd, Trump emphasized these points, claiming, “We are going to win New York!” as he courted Black and Hispanic voters.
Another crucial factor in Trump’s improved polling numbers is his increased support among Jewish voters. Trump’s performance in the Siena poll is notably stronger than that of other Republicans. The same survey found that Republicans trail Democrats by 15 percentage points on the generic congressional ballot, with 35% support for the GOP compared to 50% for Democrats, The Post report explained. This indicates that Trump’s individual appeal may be outpacing the broader Republican brand in New York.
The potential shift in voter demographics is significant given New York’s historical voting patterns. In the 2020 election, the report in The Post recalled that Biden won New York by a substantial margin, receiving 61% of the vote to Trump’s 38%. The current poll suggests a much closer contest, highlighting the potential for significant changes in voter behavior.
Trump’s ability to gain traction in traditionally Democratic strongholds like New York could have broader implications for the national political landscape. The ex-president lost New York to Biden by 23.1 percentage points four years ago and suffered a 22.5-percentage point defeat to Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016, The Post reported. The last Republican to win the state was Ronald Reagan in 1984, and just one GOP nominee has topped 40% support since 1992 — George W. Bush, who got 40.1% of the New York vote in 2004.
Trump’s campaign celebrated the new poll results, with spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt saying, “New Yorkers are waking up to the fact that Joe Biden and the Democrats are running their historic city into the ground,” according to The Post report. “As a native New Yorker who helped build the city’s skyline, President Trump is the leader who can make New York and America great again,” Leavitt added.
“Joe Biden and the Democrats’ disastrous open border, sanctuary city, soft-on-crime policies have turned New York into a dumping ground for illegal aliens and criminals, like the thugs who beat up NYPD officers in Times Square or the monster who just raped a 13-year-old in broad daylight.”
The latest Siena College poll follows a similar trend observed in a May 30 survey by Emerson College, which found Trump trailing Biden by just 7 points in New York, as was indicated in The Post report. These polls collectively suggest that Trump is making significant inroads in a state that has been a Democratic stronghold for decades.
The polling data comes at a time of significant legal challenges for Trump. On the same day the Emerson College poll was released, a Manhattan jury convicted Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, The Post report said. The case, brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, an elected Democrat, has added another layer of complexity to Trump’s campaign.
