Internationally renowned neurosurgeon Dr. John Boockvar named Clinical Investigator of the Year

NEW YORK, NY – Northwell Health has awarded John Boockvar, MD, vice chair of neurosurgery at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital, Clinical Investigator of the Year for his extensive research into novel treatments and innovative therapies for brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma. Dr. Boockvar is recognized for having procured hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money and for garnering critical support for his groundbreaking research.

 

Dr. Boockvar holds several esteemed, research-focused roles at Northwell, serving as the director of experimental research and head of research for the Western Region of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute – which encompasses Manhattan, Staten Island and Westchester. He also serves in leadership roles at multiple neurosurgical laboratories at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.

In these roles, Dr. Boockvar develops new approaches to clinical and translational research across all cancer modalities. He identifies early-phase trial opportunities across the Northwell Cancer Institute, one of the largest cancer programs in New York State. As an adjunct professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, he also serves as a liaison between the Feinstein Institutes and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to help build collaborations with clinical investigators and scientists. He oversees the clinical research portfolio for the Western Region’s cancer programs and advocates for the support, resources, and infrastructure needed to expand clinical research and develop multidisciplinary collaborations for trial development.

Dr. Boockvar’s has served as principal investigator in over 30 human clinical trials, many of which focus on brain tumor formation and resistance to therapy. He is internationally renowned for his expertise on blood brain barrier disruption to improve the delivery of therapeutics to patients with malignant brain tumors. He also works diligently to bring this research to patients by making it accessible at the bedside.

 

Dr. Boockvar’s laboratory has been funded by the National Institutes of Health. He was awarded the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Pinnacle Partners Award for his research in brain tumors and has also won research awards from Voices Against Brain Cancer, the American Brain Tumor Association, the Starr Foundation, Anspach Companies, and the Adelson Foundation.
