Residents and workers in Queens expressed anger and concern over the prevalence of prostitutes openly soliciting customers on Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, known as the “Market of Sweethearts.”
Following a report by The NY Post exposing the rampant illegal sex trade in the area, residents lamented that the police appeared to be doing little to address the issue.
Prostitution, open defecation on the street, open hard drug use, smoking pot and cigarettes in the subways, routine shop lifting, fare evasion and worse, have become the norm in NYC due to controversial “hands off approaches of crime”, which have become the norm in big cities post George Floyd.
Anna Garcia, a worker at a nearby cellphone store, voiced her frustration, claiming that the police were not taking sufficient action against the illegal activities. She described the area as plagued with drugs, prostitution, and alcohol, leading to safety concerns in a neighborhood where families with children reside.
Residents reported that the prostitutes often propositioned children, prompting worries about the safety and exposure of their young ones to such activities. The situation was made worse by the presence of drunken individuals seeking the services of the streetwalkers, creating an uncomfortable and unsafe environment.
The Post’s investigation uncovered nearly a dozen brothels in the neighborhood, and the sex trade has spilled out onto the streets, with illicit advertisements posted on YouTube targeting Spanish-speaking clients. Despite efforts by Queens prosecutors to shut down some brothels, the problem persists.
Locals expressed surprise at the apparent inaction of the police, claiming that officers spend more time bothering harmless street vendors than addressing the issue of prostitution in the area. Some even argued that the police were well aware of the situation but had not taken effective measures to address it.
In response to the accusations, the NYPD stated that it has shifted its approach to vice enforcement, focusing on those purchasing sex or promoting its sale. The department claimed to have reduced the number of arrests for prostitution and emphasized its efforts to connect victims of human trafficking with the necessary services. However, prostitution in all forms remains prohibited by law.
The situation in the “Market of Sweethearts” underscores the need for effective enforcement and community collaboration to tackle illicit activities and safeguard the well-being of residents and children in the area.
While some argue that legalizing prostitution will bring benefits such as increased regulation and improved safety for sex workers, Legalizing this practice normalizes exploitation, objectification, and commodification of individuals, leading to severe social, moral, and public health consequences.
Legalizing prostitution fundamentally undermines the dignity and human rights of sex workers. Prostitution often exploits vulnerable individuals, many of whom are trapped in the industry due to poverty, addiction, or human trafficking. Legalization legitimizes the sale of sexual services, treating human beings as mere commodities to be bought and sold, further perpetuating an unjust and degrading system.
The overwhelming majority of individuals involved in prostitution are women, who disproportionately face exploitation, violence, and abuse. By legalizing prostitution, society tacitly accepts the commodification of women’s bodies, undermining efforts towards gender equality.
Legalizing prostitution sends a harmful message to society about the value and sanctity of human relationships. It normalizes the notion that sexual encounters can be purely transactional.
