This year, six people have been killed while riding the trains, according to police statistics.
43-year-old Tommy Bailey, was a union steamfitter and father of three. He was also a star baseball player in high school.
He was fatally stabbed while riding a train in Brooklyn, according to prosecutors from the Brooklyn district attorney’s office.
Bailey ran to the defense of a police officer who was being verbally assailed by the man who eventually stabbed him to death
The suspect , Alvin Charles, who is homeless and was on supervised release after being accused of attempted murder last year in a separate case, is accused of attacking Tommy Bailey.
Last year Charles was charged in Brooklyn with assault, later upgraded to attempted murder, court records show. On Thursday, Oren Yaniv, a spokesman for the Brooklyn district attorney’s office, said that prosecutors had requested, in that earlier case, that the court hold Mr. Charles on $50,000 bail. Instead, a judge released Mr. Charles under community supervision.
Lee Zeldin is running to repeal the bail law, giving judges the right to put violent repeat criminals in jail and send the serious mentally ill to hospitals.
