We’re deep into a Covid-19 pandemic with the federal government’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) supposedly at work 24/7 to contain this disease, to save lives with its research and outreach to the nation. So what, may we ask, does focusing on disease control have to do with the CDC’s current major concern with getting into the face of landlords who expect rents from their tenants? Early in the pandemic this un-elected group decided that keeping renters in their homes was a step in the right direction to beating the virus. So they ordered an eviction moratorium for non rent payers. This ruling applied to all rental housing and tenants who earned less than $99,000 who claimed they lost income because of the pandemic. Landlords who evict non-paying tenants can now go to jail. The Bumbling Biden Administration has extended it three times although several judges ruled that they had extended their authority in getting into making laws governing the housing industry.
To join in this lunacy, we have the Supreme Court getting into this Marx Brothers act overruling their lesser justices and maintained a stay on the lower courts, stating that although the CDC had exceeded its authority they would allow this moratorium to continue. Sounds like “illegal’ is now legal. And please take into consideration that Congress had appropriated $46 billion on this bailout but because of bungling bureaucracy, to this date, only $3 billion has been doled out in rent relief. Very few had applied, and to us this indicates the good probability that there is not much call for this assistance. Just money going to waste.
We feel bad for those who cannot pay rent, for whatever reasons. And not all of these situations were caused by the Chinese Virus. Some people just don’t want to go out to work. Many are already on public assistance. How do the officials who officiate over these rental payouts differentiate between laziness and being really out of work because of shutdowns related to the disease? And did the CDC ever think about those people, those out of work, who cannot keep up, as well, with their auto payments? Cars may be essential to get to work. Why not make their payments, as well, to get them to their desks, benches or wherever? Why just pay them to keep them in their living quarters? And what about the landlords and their problems related to losing rental income on their investments? According to the law, they must keep up generating heat, water, security and maintenance for their tenants and still remain current on the mortgages of their buildings. How do they pay for such upkeep if the don’t get rental income because of the inefficiency of those civil servants who are so slow in doling out the taxpayers’ dollars to them?
From what we’ve heard, jobs are now going unfilled with employers paying big bucks to get workers. The economy grew 6.5% in the second quarter with even better forecasts prospects for the future. Let’s stop making our citizens dependent on government. Let’s stay out of the housing market and instead, focus on dealing with reducing taxes, creating jobs, keeping us all safe and making our enemies fearful of our strengths. Our landlords do not need us messing in their business.
