(TJV NEWS) The Trump administration is reportedly set to cut $510 million in federal contracts and grants from Brown University, according to reports from The Daily Caller. The decision is allegedly tied to the university’s handling of antisemitism on campus and its support for the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) movement, which has drawn criticism for promoting policies seen as undermining merit-based advancement and fostering discrimination against certain racial groups.
Brown University has been facing criticism for not adequately addressing the rise in campus antisemitism, a sentiment that has grown particularly after the university’s response to the broader national discourse on DEI. As Brown grapples with a $46 million budget shortfall, this reported federal action adds to the financial pressures many universities across the country are facing.
However, Brown officials have denied receiving any official communication from the Trump administration regarding these cuts. Provost Francis Doyle emphasized that the university is closely monitoring grant notifications but has no information confirming the reports.
In defense of the university, Brown’s Jewish community issued a statement reiterating that the campus remains a welcoming and supportive environment for Jewish students. The statement, signed by leaders of local Hillel and Chabad chapters, stressed that Brown’s commitment to inclusion, tolerance, and intellectual freedom remains steadfast.
At the same time, critics of the Trump administration’s stance, including the Brown Divest Coalition—an anti-Zionist group—and U.S. Senator Jack Reed, have condemned the move. They argue that the cuts are part of a broader effort to suppress dissent and undermine institutions that challenge the political and cultural status quo. Reed further warned that such actions could harm communities across the nation, leading to layoffs and restricting research opportunities.
As reported by The Algemeiner, the Trump administration has been systematically targeting colleges and universities accused of tolerating antisemitism or embracing overly “woke” ideologies. Recently, the administration canceled $400 million in federal funding to Columbia University and put a significant portion of Harvard University’s federal grants under review for their handling of antisemitism and pro-Hamas activities on campus. Princeton University also had $210 million in funding suspended.
The Department of Education is also investigating 60 universities over allegations of antisemitism, marking a major shift in how federal policies are being applied to higher education institutions.
