(TJV NEWS) Twelve individuals, identified as current and former Stanford University students, are facing felony charges after occupying and vandalizing a campus building during a pro-Hamas demonstration last year, the AP reported.
According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, the group has been charged with felony vandalism and felony conspiracy to trespass. The suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 32, are scheduled to be arraigned later this month at the Hall of Justice in San Jose.
The incident occurred on June 5, 2024, the final day of spring classes. Protesters barricaded themselves inside a university building that houses the president’s office, while others formed a human chain outside and shouted slogans supporting Hamas. The AP reported that the demonstrators chanted, “Palestine will be free, we will free Palestine.”
Prosecutors allege the group caused extensive damage by spray-painting graffiti, smashing windows and furniture, disabling security cameras, and splattering fake blood throughout the building. The damage was estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Authorities also said that evidence from the protesters’ cellphones revealed communications and planning materials, including a “do-it-yourself occupation guide.”
A student journalist who was arrested at the scene but not implicated in the destruction was not charged.
This was one of at least 86 anti-Israel protests on U.S. college campuses that resulted in arrests last spring, according to the AP.
