(TJV NEWS) As unrest intensifies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, the administration has asked Quebec Superior Court to issue an emergency injunction against a pro-Hamas student group accused of fueling intimidation, vandalism, and mass disruption during a critical academic period. According to detailed reporting by the Montreal Gazette, the university alleges that the group—Students for Palestine’s Honour and Resistance (SPHR)—was the driving force behind a three-day strike that paralyzed parts of the downtown campus from April 2 to 4.

In legal documents reviewed by the Montreal Gazette, McGill describes how masked demonstrators blocked access to classrooms, defaced buildings with graffiti, and created a climate of fear. Protesters reportedly threatened faculty who refused to cancel classes, calling for them to be “named and shamed” publicly. The protests led to the cancellation of at least 30 classes and the deployment of 200 private security guards across 22 buildings under heightened alert.

McGill is now seeking a 10-day provisional injunction that would forbid protesters from approaching within five metres of any university building and would bar actions that interfere with academic activity or intimidate students and staff. As noted by the Montreal Gazette, the university presented its case to the court on Thursday and is currently awaiting the judge’s decision.

McGill president Deep Saini addressed the university community directly, saying the legal action is necessary to safeguard the academic environment as final exams approach. “We are first and foremost a university,” Saini wrote. “We must focus on our mission and the rights of our students to undertake their academic pursuits in a peaceful environment that supports their well-being and success.”

The Montreal Gazette reported that the protests were sparked by a student referendum in which 72% of roughly 4,000 participants voted in favor of a strike. Protesters demanded the university sever ties with companies alleged to be connected to the Israeli military and halt disciplinary actions against pro-Palestinian activists. The Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU), the official undergraduate student union, facilitated the referendum and was also named in the court filing—though SSMU’s executive later denied involvement in organizing the April 3 protest.

SPHR, once recognized as an official campus club, had its status revoked in September following repeated clashes with university officials. Despite that, McGill alleges the group continues to use the university’s name and logo online without permission—one of many issues outlined in the injunction request.

As further reported by the Montreal Gazette, SPHR has come under national scrutiny in Canada for past social media activity, including a post celebrating Hamas’s October 7 terror attacks on Israel and another promoting a so-called “revolutionary youth summer program” featuring images of armed fighters. The group was also involved in a pro-Palestinian encampment previously set up on university grounds.

In its court filing, McGill declared: “Enough is enough. The McGill community deserves reasonable limits on the ‘protest’ activities taking place on campus — in particular with exam period about to commence.” The administration maintains that protest is no excuse for lawlessness or intimidation.

  1. Instead of marginal stories about a Canadian university, I would urge TJV report news about the URGENT issues for American Jews, including the Democrat party’s war on Israel and support of almost all of America’s “elite” universities’ war on Jewish students.
President Trump is addressing the issue, for example, by cutting off federal aid to Harvard, which is permitting, aiding and abetting it’s administration’s, faculty’s and “student“ harassment and attacks on Jewish students. TJV needs to in fact be the the American Jewish’ Voice on the rampant mainstream leftist war on America’s Jews.
