(TJV NEWS)  President Donald Trump stirred controversy over the weekend after signaling openness to the idea of the United States becoming an associate member of the Commonwealth—an international group led symbolically by King Charles III.

The conversation was sparked by a Sun report suggesting that King Charles may consider inviting the U.S. into the Commonwealth in a non-monarchical role. While no official offer has been confirmed, Trump took to Truth Social to weigh in, writing:
“I Love King Charles. Sounds good to me!”

The post drew a firestorm of reactions from Trump’s own support base, with some prominent right-wing voices warning that such a move could damage his core following.

According to Newsweek, the backlash was immediate and intense. Some Trump supporters viewed any alignment with the British monarchy as a betrayal of American independence, invoking the Revolutionary War and accusing King Charles of being aligned with globalist agendas.

One commenter wrote:

“Mr. President, with all due respect, hell no! If we wanted to be part of England, we would not have elected you!”

Another added:

“You will lose 95% of your support base. Our founders revolted to get away from this exact thing.”

Conservative media figure Alex Jones also jumped into the fray on X (formerly Twitter), issuing a fiery warning to Trump.

“If you really try to make America join the British Commonwealth, 1776 will commence again!”

In a video clip viewed nearly 5 million times, Jones accused the former president of “literally reversing” the American Revolution.

The Newsweek report clarified a key misconception circulating among critics: that joining the Commonwealth would not make King Charles the head of state in the U.S. The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent countries that collaborate on trade, development, and global cooperation. Its members include realms like Canada and Australia that do still recognize the monarch, as well as republics that do not.

An associate membership for the United States—if ever formally proposed—would not equate to any return to monarchy or colonial status, but that hasn’t quelled MAGA concerns over perceived symbolism or sovereignty.

As of now, Buckingham Palace has made no public statement, and the U.S. government has not acknowledged any official proposal. Still, the very idea—paired with Trump’s enthusiastic comment—has already ignited ideological tensions within his base.
