(TJV) The head of the FBI’s New York Field Office, James Dennehy, was forced into retirement on Monday, sources confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Dennehy, who was appointed to the position by former FBI Director Christopher Wray in September 2024, announced his departure in an internal email to colleagues, which was obtained by Fox News Digital.

He revealed that he was informed late Friday that he needed to submit his retirement papers but was not given an explanation.

“Regardless, I apologize to all of you for not being able to fulfill my commitment to serve as ADIC NY for at least two years,” Dennehy wrote in his farewell message.

Dennehy’s Career and Departure Amid Political Shifts

Dennehy, a former U.S. Marine who joined the FBI in 2002 following the 9/11 attacks, had an extensive career, earning multiple promotions and leadership roles, including overseeing the bureau’s Newark and New York offices.

His departure comes amid a wave of changes under President Donald Trump’s new administration, including the recent confirmations of FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

Dennehy had been at the center of tensions within the bureau, particularly over the Trump administration’s questionnaire sent to FBI personnel regarding their involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot investigations. He was vocal in urging agents to protect the agency’s independence.

Additionally, he played a role in the corruption investigation into New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted last fall before the Justice Department later moved to dismiss the case. The presiding judge has yet to rule on that request.

FBI Independence and Unanswered Questions

Dennehy’s retirement follows Attorney General Pam Bondi’s claims that the FBI’s New York office withheld key documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. While it is unclear whether Dennehy had any involvement in that case, Bondi has vowed to hold officials accountable.

In his farewell message, Dennehy expressed pride in his colleagues and their commitment to upholding the law.

“We will not bend. We will not falter. We will not sacrifice what is right for anything or anyone,” he wrote.
