Family of Jewish Actress Michelle Trachtenberg Refuse Performance of Autopsy; Cause of Death is Undetermined

The sudden and unexpected death of actress Michelle Trachtenberg at the age of 39 has left many in shock, not only because of her young age but also due to the lack of an autopsy to determine her official cause of death. Known for her roles in Gossip Girl, Harriet the Spy, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Trachtenberg was found unresponsive in her New York City apartment on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., according to the New York Police Department (NYPD), according to a Jewish Telegraphic Agency report. Despite the unclear circumstances surrounding her death, her family has declined an autopsy for religious reasons, raising questions about Jewish burial practices and the medical examiner’s procedures in such cases.

According to the NYPD, officers were called to Trachtenberg’s luxury apartment in Manhattan, where they found her unconscious and unresponsive. EMS personnel pronounced her dead at the scene, but authorities did not suspect foul play. Under New York law, an autopsy is typically required in cases where a death is suspicious or criminal activity is suspected. However, since there were no immediate signs of foul play, the medical examiner’s office did not insist on a post-mortem examination.

This decision means that, unless more information surfaces, the official cause of death will remain undetermined. The JTA reported that while autopsies are often performed in cases of sudden or unexplained deaths, New York state allows a victim’s next of kin to refuse the procedure on religious or cultural grounds—a right that Trachtenberg’s family exercised.

Trachtenberg was Jewish, and traditional Jewish law—halacha—strictly prohibits autopsies under most circumstances. Jewish burial customs emphasize the sanctity and integrity of the human body, requiring that it be buried quickly and as intact as possible, as was indicated in the JTA report. This is why, in cases where the body has been damaged due to trauma, Jewish authorities and burial organizations go to great lengths to recover even the smallest biological remains to ensure they are buried together.

The Torah and subsequent rabbinic rulings establish that the body must be treated with the utmost respect and dignity, and the act of cutting into a body, removing organs, or performing a dissection is seen as a form of desecration. The JTA report said that this principle explains why Trachtenberg’s family chose to decline an autopsy, as it aligns with halachic law and the Jewish belief in preserving the body for burial.

While Jewish law generally forbids autopsies, certain exceptions exist. Some rabbinical authorities permit post-mortem examinations in limited cases, such as:

If an autopsy could help convict a murderer – If a violent crime is suspected, an autopsy might be allowed to ensure justice is served. However, in Trachtenberg’s case, no foul play was suspected, removing this as a consideration.

To prevent further deaths – If a person’s death is due to a genetic disorder or contagious disease, an autopsy may be permitted if it can provide medical insight that could save lives. However, Jewish legal scholars emphasize that such procedures must be performed with minimal intrusion.

If the law requires it – In some jurisdictions, an autopsy is mandatory. In such cases, Jewish law may reluctantly allow it, though religious advocates often work with authorities to avoid unnecessary procedures.

Given that Trachtenberg’s family had legal grounds to refuse, and since no criminal investigation was underway, halachic principles prevailed, and her remains were left undisturbed.

Although the cause of Trachtenberg’s death remains undetermined, media reports suggest she was a recent recipient of a liver transplant. Liver transplants, while life-saving, come with significant risks, including:

Organ rejection – The immune system may attack the new liver, leading to complications or failure.

Infections – Transplant recipients take immunosuppressive drugs, which can make them more vulnerable to infections.

Medication side effects – Post-transplant treatments can lead to severe complications, including kidney damage, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular issues.

Without an autopsy, medical experts can only speculate about what caused her death. It is possible that complications from her transplant, an undetected illness, or a sudden medical event led to her passing. However, without forensic examination, the exact cause will remain unknown.

As the entertainment industry and fans mourn Trachtenberg’s passing, her family has requested privacy during this time of grief. Gary Mantoosh, a representative for the actress, issued a brief statement to USA TODAY, saying: “The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.”

While many remain curious about the circumstances of her passing, the family’s religious beliefs and personal wishes take precedence. Their decision to forgo an autopsy is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition, reflecting the centuries-old customs that prioritize respect for the deceased over scientific inquiry.

Michelle Trachtenberg’s death at 39 has come as a profound shock to fans who grew up watching her on-screen. From her childhood breakout role in Harriet the Spy to her beloved performances in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, she left an indelible mark on pop culture.

Despite the mystery surrounding her death, what remains undeniable is the impact she had on audiences, and the grief her family, friends, and fans now face. Her passing serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the deeply personal decisions that shape how we honor those who leave us too soon.
