24th Annual Community Days Kickoff Brings Staten Island Together for Positive Change and Collaboration

The 24th Annual Community Days Kickoff, a key event aimed at strengthening dialogue and collaboration among community leaders, civic organizations, and law enforcement, took place in Staten Island, reinforcing the borough’s commitment to community improvement and unity. The Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island (COJO), led by President Mendy Mirocznik, played a vital role in facilitating these important conversations.
The event featured prominent figures, including New York City Council Member Kamillah Hanks, as well as top NYPD officials such as Chief Terrence Hurson, Executive Officer of Patrol Borough Staten Island, and the borough’s four precinct commanders: Inspector Eric Waldhelm (Pct. 120), Inspector Glorisel Lee (Pct. 121), Captain Luigi Carrubba (Pct. 122), and Captain Jimmy Palaj (Pct. 123). Their presence emphasized the NYPD’s commitment to working closely with community leaders to enhance public safety and strengthen community relations.
The main focus of the event was exploring opportunities for joint community-NYPD projects that address Staten Island’s unique needs while fostering mutual respect and understanding. A significant portion of the discussions centered on the rise in anti-Semitism and hate crimes, underscoring the importance of standing united against all forms of hate and discrimination.
Mendy Mirocznik expressed the deep concerns within the Jewish community, particularly in light of events since October 7, and highlighted the critical role of the day’s discussions. “This event has given COJO an invaluable platform to voice our concerns, strengthen our relationships with community leaders, and collectively work toward maintaining peace, civility, and safety across Staten Island,” Mirocznik said.
He also praised the NYPD for their unwavering support and responsiveness, which has not only provided reassurance to the community but has also been instrumental in maintaining public order during challenging times.
Chief Hurson echoed these sentiments, applauding Staten Island’s community organizations and leaders for their proactive engagement. “The success of our policing efforts is deeply enhanced by our partnership with organizations like COJO and leaders like Mendy Mirocznik. Their dedication to open dialogue and collaboration is essential in addressing the needs of Staten Island’s diverse population,” Hurson remarked.
