A new survey, conducted under the leadership of the Office of the Chief Scientist, in collaboration with the Firearms Licensing and Supervision Division of the National Security Ministry in Israel has revealed widespread public support for civilian armament as a means to enhance personal and national security. According to the survey results, an overwhelming majority of the Jewish public in Israel believes that firearms in the hands of trained civilians contribute to overall safety.

The findings demonstrate that even among citizens who do not currently own a firearm and have no intention of applying for a license, the majority still recognize the positive impact of armed civilians in fostering a sense of security within their communities. These results provide strong validation for the firearm reform policies that have been spearheaded in recent years, particularly those implemented under the leadership of MK Itamar Ben Gvir, former Minister of National Security.

72% of licensed gun owners, or those in the process of obtaining a license, reported that armed civilians contribute to an increased sense of security in their residential areas.

Responsible Firearm Ownership: Compliance with Regulations

The survey also sought to examine how well licensed firearm owners adhere to safety and regulatory guidelines as outlined by the National Security Ministry. The results indicate that firearm owners in Israel take their responsibilities seriously, with high levels of compliance regarding safety measures:

81% of gun owners reported that they secure their firearms in a safe when not carrying them, ensuring that their weapons are stored safely and responsibly.

69% stated that they carry their firearm every time they leave their home, demonstrating a high level of preparedness among legally armed civilians.

72% of licensed firearm owners believe that regular firearm training and proficiency drills are crucial, going beyond the minimum training requirements mandated by the National Security Ministry.

According to data from the National Security Ministry, since the outbreak of the ongoing war with Hamas and other Iranian-backed proxies more than 200,000 Israeli civilians have obtained personal firearm licenses.
