Jessica Tisch: The Unexpected Leader New York City Desperately Needs

As New York City teeters on the brink of another political disaster, the uncertainty surrounding Mayor Eric Adams’ re-election bid has left a leadership void that must be filled with competence, integrity, and a commitment to restoring stability. With the Democratic primary looming on June 24, the city is at risk of falling into the hands of far-left ideologues or washed-up politicians more interested in their own power than in solving the city’s deep-seated problems. This is why Jessica Tisch represents New York’s best hope for a future that is safe, sane, and prosperous.

According to Judge Dale Ho’s ruling on Friday, Adams’ chances of remaining in the race remain in limbo, and this should be a wake-up call for anyone who wants a functioning city government. The alternative candidates, as they stand, are nothing short of terrifying. Brad Lander, a man whose radical policies have already caused measurable harm to the city’s economy and public safety, is now trying to hide his socialist credentials in a cynical bid to fool centrist voters. Meanwhile, Andrew Cuomo, the former governor who not only caved to the radical left but actively facilitated New York’s descent into lawlessness, is reportedly considering a comeback. His legacy—ranging from disastrous bail reforms to the wholesale release of violent criminals—is still wreaking havoc on the streets of New York.

The Republican alternative is Curtis Sliwa—again. While Sliwa is a dedicated New Yorker, his previous run demonstrated that he lacks the broad support necessary to bring the city back from the brink. Simply put, New Yorkers deserve better than this dismal set of options.

The name Jessica Tisch may not yet be widely known among voters, but for those familiar with New York’s inner workings, she is a force to be reckoned with. Her rise through city government has been defined by effectiveness, pragmatism, and an unshakable intolerance for corruption and incompetence.

Tisch’s experience is unmatched. She first made her mark in the NYPD’s counterterrorism bureau in 2008, demonstrating a keen understanding of security and law enforcement. She later served as the city’s technology chief under Mayor Bill de Blasio, where she worked to modernize outdated government systems. Then came her tenure as Sanitation Commissioner, where she managed to turn the city’s rat-infested streets into something approaching livable conditions—an achievement that may seem mundane but speaks volumes about her ability to solve seemingly intractable urban problems.

Since taking the reins as New York’s Police Commissioner, Tisch has done what many politicians lack the courage to do: tell the truth about the crime crisis and take decisive action to fix it.

At her State of the NYPD address, she laid bare the city’s greatest problem: repeat offenders cycling through a justice system designed to protect criminals rather than the public. Tisch called out the “revolving door” that allows violent criminals to be arrested and released again and again, ensuring that the same individuals continue terrorizing New Yorkers.

“It defies common sense, and it is crying out for a course correction,” Tisch said. She is absolutely right. And while New York’s Democratic establishment prefers to ignore this glaring issue, Tisch has proven that she is not afraid to challenge the status quo—even when it makes her enemies.

Her commitment to cleaning up the NYPD speaks volumes about her leadership. Within a month of taking charge, she removed more than a dozen high-ranking officers, including those implicated in serious misconduct, such as Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, who was accused of trading sex for overtime pay. Unlike so many career politicians, Tisch does not tolerate corruption, incompetence, or empty rhetoric.

Yes, Tisch is a technocrat. But she is the right kind of technocrat: one who understands how government works, has the will to reform it, and refuses to let ideological dogma override common sense. She has never run for office before—but in a time of crisis, that might be a feature, not a bug.

New York is facing an exodus of residents who have simply had enough—whether it’s from crime-ridden streets, skyrocketing energy bills thanks to Cuomo’s disastrous “climate agenda,” or the migrant crisis that continues to drain city resources. If we continue with the same political regulars who have ignored public frustration, we will only see the crisis deepen.

It is precisely in times like these that leadership can emerge from unexpected places. Tisch is that leader. She understands the urgency of the moment, she is not beholden to political machines, and she has already demonstrated a willingness to take on entrenched interests in order to make the city work.

Let’s be clear: Tisch has not announced any intention to run. Building a campaign from scratch would be a daunting challenge. She has low name recognition, and stepping into the political arena would put her at odds with every entrenched power player in New York.

But does that mean she shouldn’t run? Absolutely not.

New Yorkers are angry. They have watched their city decline while politicians on both the far left and the corrupt center-left do nothing to stop it. Tisch is the kind of leader who could actually channel that anger into action—not through empty slogans or partisan talking points, but through results.

Imagine a mayoral race where New Yorkers are not forced to choose between a washed-up Cuomo, a radical leftist like Brad Lander, or another half-hearted Adams term (assuming he can even run). Imagine a city led by someone who prioritizes competence, accountability, and public safety above political ambition.

That’s a race worth having. That’s a future worth fighting for.

Tisch may not be running—yet. But if she does, she just might save New York City.
