Yankees Explore Trade Options After Losing Juan Soto to Mets

(TJV) The New York Yankees are actively reshaping their roster following the departure of Juan Soto to the New York Mets. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the team is exploring trade opportunities involving right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman, potentially using him to acquire an infielder.

One option under consideration is a trade for Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon. Newsweek‘s Drew VonScio proposed a deal where the Yankees would receive McMahon and international bonus pool money, while the Rockies would get Stroman and infielder Oswaldo Cabrera.

“This trade benefits both teams,” VonScio wrote. “The Yankees would solidify a key infield position, likely third base, with McMahon. Cabrera, who is unlikely to have a significant role in 2025, could benefit from a fresh start. For the Rockies, Stroman would provide a much-needed boost to their pitching rotation, which struggled due to injuries last season.”

McMahon has started 532 career games at third base and was an All-Star for the first time last season. He hit 20 home runs in 2024, marking the fifth time in the past six seasons he’s reached that milestone—his only exception being the shortened 2020 season. McMahon’s arrival in New York would allow the Yankees to establish Jazz Chisholm as their everyday second baseman.

While McMahon could provide a much-needed upgrade for the Yankees’ infield, the Rockies may also view this as an opportunity to move on from his remaining contract. McMahon signed a six-year, $70 million extension in 2022, with $44 million still owed over the next few seasons.

This potential trade underscores the Yankees’ efforts to bounce back after a challenging offseason, with an eye on improving their infield depth and overall roster.
