Congressman Ritchie Torres Condemns Governor Kathy Hochul for Ignoring Anti-Semitism in State Address

Edited by: Fern Sidman

Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY) has strongly criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul for failing to address anti-Semitism in her 2025 State of the State address and report, a glaring omission given the rise in anti-Semitic hate crimes across the state. According to a report on the Vois Es Nais web site, Torres highlighted the absence of any mention of the term “anti-Semitism” in the Governor’s 140-page report and her hour long speech, both of which were intended to outline key challenges and priorities for New York.

The issue gained urgency following the October 7th Hamas led massacre in southern Israel that saw 1200 people brutally slaughtered and 251 others taken into Hamas captivity in Gaza.  This horrifying terror attack triggered a surge in anti-Semitic incidents. Despite this alarming trend, Governor Hochul’s speech made no reference to the crisis. Congressman Torres, a staunch advocate for Jewish communities, expressed his frustration in a post on X (formerly Twitter), accusing the Governor not only of failing to combat anti-Semitism but of neglecting to even acknowledge its existence. As VIN News reported, Torres described this omission as a scandal and a profound failure of leadership.

Torres’s criticism calls attention to his ongoing commitment to addressing hate crimes targeting Jewish communities. He has been an outspoken supporter of efforts to combat anti-Semitism and has frequently called on government officials to take a stronger stance against rising violence. In his remarks, Torres emphasized that ignoring the problem only emboldens those who perpetrate such acts and leaves communities vulnerable to further harm.

VIN News also noted that the Congressman’s comments reflect broader concerns about the perceived lack of action from state leadership. New York has seen a troubling increase in anti-Semitic incidents, including physical assaults, vandalism, and harassment. Advocacy groups have repeatedly urged officials to take stronger measures, such as increasing security in Jewish neighborhoods, promoting educational initiatives, and ensuring robust law enforcement responses.

As New York continues to grapple with rising anti-Semitism, the need for decisive leadership has never been more urgent.
