(TJV) In a rare triumph for the horror genre, Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance has earned five Oscar nominations, including the coveted Best Picture nod. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, nominations for horror films at the Academy Awards have historically been few and far between, making this accomplishment particularly notable.
The film also secured nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, both credited to Fargeat, as well as Best Actress for Demi Moore and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The Substance now joins an elite group of horror films to break through the Academy’s genre bias, following in the footsteps of classics like The Exorcist (1973), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Get Out (2017), and Black Swan (2010), which each earned nominations—and, in some cases, wins—at Hollywood’s most prestigious ceremony.
As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter, The Substance is a body-horror thriller that leans heavily on practical effects to deliver its unsettling visuals. The story follows Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading celebrity played by Moore, who takes a black-market drug that temporarily transforms her into a younger version of herself, named Sue (played by Margaret Qualley). As the transformation takes hold, Elisabeth must grapple with the horrifying and surreal fallout of her decision.
Critics have praised the film’s visceral storytelling and the dual performances by Moore and Qualley, with The Hollywood Reporter describing Moore’s portrayal as “career-defining.” The practical effects, a signature of Fargeat’s direction, have also been lauded for their haunting realism, a key factor in the film’s nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Fargeat’s dual nods for directing and writing place her in an even smaller group of filmmakers who have received such recognition for horror projects. The Hollywood Reporter notes that her achievement echoes the successes of Jordan Peele for Get Out and Jonathan Demme for The Silence of the Lambs, both of whom previously elevated the genre into the awards conversation.
The recognition of The Substance marks a significant moment for horror films in Hollywood, as the genre continues to break barriers and earn its place alongside more traditionally honored categories of cinema. The Hollywood Reporter emphasizes that the film’s success could pave the way for future horror projects to gain mainstream accolades
